Possible TURP

Hi all

This is not directly PC related but it seems that my LH may need another operation before he can have his radiotherapy.  He is due to have his hernia repaired next Wednesday but had an appointment with the Urology consultant on Monday and had a flow test. His waterworks are still not brilliant and he has a lot of urgency although night times are a lot better.  His flow was shown to be pretty good and he produced a normal volume of urine.  However once he had finished there was a residual volume of 219ml which concerned the urologist who said it could be made worse by the radiotherapy.  So he has t have a urodynamics test and, based on the results of that, maybe a TURP operation.  This seems to have got him down more than anything so far; it seems that hurdles seem to keep being put in our way.  The urologist said that they will treat it as a cancer operation if it is needed as it will be holding up cancer treatment if not performed quickly.

Does anyone else have any similar experience and did it delay your RT?  He is on HT but I think he just wants to get on with having it zapped!

Many thanks.

  • Hello

Yes, I've been there got the TURP T-Shirt. My TURP operation was delayed by 10 months (delaying my Radiotherapy) but this was during COVID so your LH should be seen quickly. Here's the NHS information on the TURP:

    Transurethral-resection-of-the-prostate. (TURP).

It's a simple pain free operation that needs either 1 or 2 nights in hospital. I got away with one night (the details are in my profile - click on my name or avatar for details).

I am happy to answer any questions you have - I hope it goes well for him.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi  , I can’t recall when LH started on HT but simply put, this will slow down and hold back any potential spread.  Although I had chemo before HT I do recall my oncologist suggesting that a gap between HT start and RT of at least 2 to 3 months to ‘soften up the prostate’ before zapping it.  Your team sound very aware, so I wouldn’t over worry.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hello Dogs4me,

I can certainly understand the possible delay in starting RT may be worrying for your LH, but (& this is easy for me to say), try & look at it another way.  If there is a need for a TURP, then getting this out of the way now will help tremendously with any possible side effects when he does come to have the RT.  On that basis it's better being picked up now.

I feel sure I read in a previous post of yours that he was already on HT, so this will be working it's magic in controlling the cancer & stopping any spread so if a TURP is needed, any delay in starting RT shouldn't be an issue.

    Best Wishes

    Brian

  • Thanks Brian

I thought I had read that you had had a TURP but didn't realise it delayed things that much!  I have read the link you provided- thank you. Do you know how long after a TURP you can have radiotherapy? Fingers crossed he won't need it but just in case ....

    Thanks again Blush

  • Thank you David. Yes LH started HT in September so hopefully it is keeping things under control Fingers crossed

  • Thank you Brian

That is a good way to look at it. I think it is just the idea of having potentially having two operations before they can really start work on the cancer that is getting him down. I think he will feel better once his hernia is done on Wednesday.

    Thanks again

  • Hi my TURP put back my radiotherapy by 3 months, and was starting 8 weeks after the operation, the surgery as others have said is a simple procedure which will make a big difference to LH bladder function and health, with the added benefit of the shavings from the surgery giving the clearest picture of your cancer, so making sure you get the best treatment for  you.

  • Hello

Eddie (  above is spot on. My radiotherapy was 2.5 months after the TURP - Christmas and New Year increased the gap. The delay is to allow any swelling of the gland after the TURP to reduce and it goes back to normal size.

As for the "chips" they took during the TURP I was promoted from a Gleason 7 (4+3) to a Gleason 9 (5+4) Rage.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thank you Brian

it is all very confusing. His flow rate was normal and actually good according to the consultant it was better than his (apparently it was 18 point something) so how can there be a blockage Thinking. Ah well I guess time will tell. Hopefully it is an overactive bladder and they can give him medication. Fingers crossed

  • Thank you Relaxed️
