Hi All
If you read my previous post you will know that my LH had what was thought to be a UTI a couple of weeks ago (cloudy urine, increased urgency, strange sensation when peeing -although not pain). The GP tested and urine contained leukocytes and blood so they started him on antibiotics and sent sample off to be cultured. However a couple of days later it appeared on his hospital notes that there was no growth in the culture so not a bacterial infection.
I tried to get LH to ring the cancer specialist nurse but he wouldn't as he said he was feeling better so the antibiotics were clearly working. However a few days before he finished the antibiotics he found he could only pee a few drops at a time so he rang the nurse who was not available, but she phoned him back later that day. By that time he had managed a reasonable pee but was having to go very often and very urgently. The nurse told him to ring oncology triage which he did and they sent him back to the GP to get another urine test which was clear. Triage rang back the next day by which time he was feeling much better, not normal as he has not been normal in this department since this all started but much better. She told him to drink more, keep a record of how often and how much he drinks and pees and and she would pass all the info on to his team.
The next day he received a phone call asking him to attend a face to face appointment on 28th which we attended yesterday. Basically they are not sure why this keeps getting better and worse and they said that they would have hoped that the hormone injections would be shrinking the prostate and that although the prostate was big it wasn't big enough to be causing all this (68cc) which I thought was odd. He said it is probably 'just due to your cancer'. He said that he would refer him back to urology to see if they can help as if he cannot hold a full bladder he will not be able to have the radiotherapy. He then sent him to have bloods taken (2 hour wait!).
Last night we looked at his hospital record and can see that the results of the bloods are there but we will not be able to view them until tomorrow night. There are loads of results including a full blood count, kidney function, liver function and PSA.
I must admit that things seem to be getting worse rather than better in the peeing department despite the hormone injections. Is it possible for them not to work right from the start? I have started to really worry (again). I know that the PSA test might shed some light but in the mean time I am getting very anxious ......
Has anyone else experienced anything like this.
Many thanks for listening
Hello Dogs4me
I am so sorry to read your latest update. As humans we are all built the same but our bodies are all different sizes and not everything works as it should. Here are a few of my thoughts:
* I had an enlarged prostate (I don't know how big it was!) but it grew into my urethra and also closed off my bladder exit causing me to retain urine and not to pee when I wanted to. The answer to this problem was a catheter and then a TURP operation to open everything up - NHS - TURP Operation. I am not saying this is the problem or the answer.
* Yes, Hormone Therapy does shrink the Prostate. However if the injection is nor given properly according to the instructions to mix the drug it has been known to fail. His PSA reading would show this by not being reduced.
* Most Prostate Radiotherapy is undertaken full bladder/empty bowel but some centres (mine included The Christie Oldham) did it empty bladder/empty bowel so it can be done - don't worry about this at the moment.
I hope my ramblings help. keep asking questions and keep us posted with his progress.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hello Dogs4me
catastrophying
That's a cracking word!!
The PSA results will tell you if the HT is working and if it's been correctly mixed and injected. If it's a "dud" they can give him another one.
Eventually many men become "Hormone Resistant" but iv'e never know one to be HT resistant from the get-go. (Iv'e been wrong before! ).
Best wishes - Brian.

Thanks Brian
It is just with having no real side effects of the HT and now this my anxiety has kicked in.
He has an appointment with surgery about his hernia tomorrow ( apparently this needs to be fixed before radiotherapy) and an appointment for a flow test and with the urology consultant on 17th November so we are expecting an invite to the staff Christmas party this year
