Second biopsy needed

Hi everyone

I’ve just turned 51 yrs & 6 months ago had a PSA test returning 3.6.  Doctor told me to take a second test 6 months later & this returned at 5.4.

NHS were fantastic and less than a week later MRI done with a P-RAD 5 score returned.

Biopsy was 2 weeks ago and I’ve seen the registrar this morning for my results and from the 12 biopsy samples taken none are cancerous however there are 2 suspicious areas they want to complete further tests on.  Upshot being a second biopsy under general anaesthetic where they intend to take up to 30 samples.

Has anyone experienced this ? I’m feeling really confused about what’s happening.

thanks

  • Hi Mark and welcome

    There are two different biopsies

Trans rectal and trans perineal, u had the former which normally takes fewer samples.

That is why they are now doing the trans perineal biopsy.

Good news is your PSA is not particularly high and although something will probably show on the new biopsy hopefully easily treatable and potentially curable.

    Best wishes

  • Hello Mark (

Great service from the NHS and you have a fantastic team.

P-RAD 5 is a significant chance of Prostate Cancer as shown on the MRI scan and the scan had given a clear image of your prostate to the radiographers.

The 2 transperineal biopsy's have show no cancer in the cores taken but I would think they have not been able to get samples from all areas of the gland. Doing a biopsy under GA will allow them better access. Once they have a sample of the cancer it can be staged to find out how aggressive it is.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes - Brian.
