UTI on Decapeptyl

Hi all

I haven't bee on these boards much since we got LH's treatment plan as it was as if I had to have a break from the worry and high alert that I had been on until that point.  However it was a temporary respite!  LH had his first shot (3 months worth) of decapeptl 3 weeks ago.  He had been on Bicalutamide tablets for two weeks before that and finished those a week ago.

He has not really had any side effects yet.  Had one spell of coming over hot and a little shaky whilst gardening in the sun an a couple of days of a dizzy head but this man or may not be related.  In fact the lack of side effects were worrying me a little as I was worried that they may not be working.

A few days ago he noticed that he was peeing more than usual (already peeing more than before all this started) and it felt a bit weird.  He then noticed that his pee was cloudy so he phoned the Grand they did a urine test, which showed blood and leukocytes were present.  He is on antibiotics and has to have another test in tow weeks to check if there is still blood in his urine.  In the meantime the sample has been sent off for culture.

My question is, is this likely to be a side affect of the medication, related to PC or neither.  Starting to worry something else might be going on.

Many thanks Slight smile

  • Hello

I am sorry to read of your LH's issues - I have been on Decapeptyl for over 3 years and not had that side effect - I checked on the Patient Information Sheet and it's not listed (a copy of the PIL is here):

    Decapeptyl - Patient Information Leaflet.

I am not medically trained but would say it's not connected to the HT but I have been wrong before. As you will see the list of possible side effects is quite long!

I wish him a speedy recovery - and not many side effects.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Brian

It just seems a big coincidence that he has never had a UTI in his life but gets this now. Do you think it could be linked directly to the PC?
    Many thanks Blush

  • Hello

Blood in the urine is a symptom of Prostate Cancer BUT if he is passing urine more frequently and possibly not voiding fully then the chance of irritation and a UTI would increase.

Anyone with blood in their urine should seek professional medical advice right away so he's done the right thing. It's just a waiting game now for the results and a second test.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi   It is quite natural to jump to conclusions whenever something abnormal happens (I do it all the time).  I don’t know how long after a biopsy the effects can be found, but maybe it is from that.  Anyway, antibiotics will probably sort out if it is a UTI and all will be resolved.  Let us know how he gets on. Remember to drink plenty of water.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Thank you David

i have just checked his hospital record and the culture results are on the and show no significant growth which would indicate not a UTI I guess. However his urine is much less cloudy this morning which would indicate that the antibiotics are working which they would t if it was not a UTI would it? Makes no sense to me Worried

  • According to his health record there is no significant growth on the culture so not likely to be a UTI however the antibiotics seem to be doing something as his urine is less cloudy so it is very confusing Worried

  • Hello

I think the answer to settle your anxiety would be to contact his Cancer team and ask the question to them - "There's blood in his urine but it's not a UTI - what's causing it?"

The human body is quite complex and they would be the best team to ask. As he's on HT you should at least have a number for his CNS (Cancer Nurse Specialist).

    Best wishes - Brian.
