Good morning
my dad is on day 4 today of radiotherapy for prostate cancer
he’s having difficulty passing urine , he said it’s painful and not much comes out when he tries
we did tell the staff at clatterbridge yesterday and they said it’s common but not really this early on in treatment
Iv told my dad to tell them today how bad it is as I’m concerned he will end up with a kidney infection if he’s not emptying his bladder properly
just wanted to ask has anyone else had this during treatment
the staff said he can take tablets to help which it’s looking like he will need
thanks for any advise

Hi Lesleymak77 - the tablets are almost certainly Tamsulosin. They should help this side effect significantly. Ask for immediate start. AW
Hi thank you so much I’m by going today with my dad as I’m working but I’ll pass it on x
Within a week of starting HT I was having problem urinating (specially during my 5 nightly visits to the bathroom). Often it was a spurt or a splutter or a dribble, although it normally got better during the day.
I was given Tamsulosin, which relaxes the muscles around the prostate and bladder, which helped a lot. The RT staff can't prescribe it for you as it needs to come from a doctor, as it can come with side effects (it can effect your blood pressure so may not be suitable for people on blood pressure medication).
Tamulosin tablets are the first line of defence. If symptoms are severe you can ask to be trained in ISC (Intermittent Self Catherization).
This happened to one patient in my radiotherapy cohort. Most people find Tamulosin is sufficient.
I did find the first radiotherapy session of the week (after the weekend) to be the worst for my flow and then things settled for the rest of the week.
All the best Rob
Hi Rob thank you for the reply
they seem reluctant to give my dad anything as they say it’s too early on in the treatment
thanks x
Thank you
my dad only started treatment properly last Friday so it sounds similar
he’s been told to drink more water and see if that helps
thanks for the reply

Hi Lesley - if it is tamsulosin and it doesn't suit your dad, just be aware there are other drugs that work as effectively. Don't suffer in silence feeling horribly nauseous as my husband did for several weeks over Dec/January last year. That was one miserable Christmas I don't want to revisit in a hurry!!!
Tamulosin is very well tolerated so I would persist in asking for it so you can see if it helps. It works very quickly so it won't take long to find out if it helps. Urinary retention is not pleasant so don't suffer in silence.
Rob
