PSMA PET scan, MDT, holiday and dilemma

Hi all

Sorry me again looking for some perspective on our dilemma.

LH has PSMA PET scan booked for Friday afternoon.  Assuming that it goes ahead (there is a caveat that this can be cancelled at the last minute if there is a problem with the supply of the tracer), then the earliest it will go to MDT is the following Friday morning when they have their weekly meeting.  This is the day before we go on holiday for a week (in the UK).  Out Key worker said that we can phone up a couple of days after the scan and she would go through it with us if it is available, so they are obviously expecting results to be quick.

Here is the dilemma:

  • Do we phone her and potentially have bad news that it has spread just before our holiday.  LH is of the opinion that we should not ring and deal with it all when we get back which, up to a point, I agree with, However ....
  • If we did ring and it was bad news would the nurse be able to get him on HT before it goes to the MDT (of which she is a member) so he can start immediately?
  • If it is bad news would they ring us anyway after the MDT and so, potentially, in the middle of our week away.  We would then feel we had to come home to get the prescription.
  • I know in the scheme of things the holiday is not of any great importance but we are both exhausted from this time of worry, uncertainty and constantly thinking about it and feel that we would both benefit from some time to, hopefully, decompress a little.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thank you for your help once again.

  • I’m with your LH and go on your holiday. The MTD will provide the best information and I doubt that the earlier pet-scan review will really do much more than confuse you, if you get it.

Patience is hard to come by but a little break might help. The only thing is, are you going to start wanting to know about your situation and any plans for extra tests or treatments?

It’s up to you both to decide but this pathway is a long one and as you’ll find out in time, it’s never straight forward route.

It sounds like you’re in a bit of a panic with all this but you will find you’re own pace in dealing with the couple’s disease that we are all experiencing and suffering with.

Chill if you can, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

  • Hello

    It's a holiday - holidays are important.

I know you want the results, you want to start treatment and you want to get moving, however a week won't make any difference in his condition.

Go on holiday - enjoy the time as a couple and come back refreshed and ready to deal with the MDT results (which you don't have to accept).

Life is too short and PCa can wait a week.

    best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello D4 me

when we finally got all the results and a treatment sorted (rt and HT) I thought it was massively urgent to get that first HT tablet swallowed! However, I have since realised that a few days ( or even a week or two) does not make much difference to the cancer growth. It does, however, make a difference psychologically because you feel that you are now tackling the cancer - hitting it on the head, so to speak!

however, once treatment has started we found a reasonable priced insurance impossible to get. We were confined to the uk! I know you are staying in the UK but you and your husband have a journey ahead of you with this cancer. Why not put the cancer to one side for a week and enjoy life in the ‘here and now ‘ with no treatment side effects, no tablets to take ( your hubby is most likely to be prescribed bicalutamide tablets for 28 days) etc? You will then have hopefully some lovely memories to remember as you hit some of the darker days we all encounter as treatment progresses?

I hope you can put your worries to one side and have a wonderful holiday with glorious weather, good food and a good restBlush

  • Thank you.  As you may ave realised I am not the most patient of people and do worry/overthing things.  But what you say makes perfect sense.  Thank you Slight smile

  • Thank you.  You are right, I just want to feel that something is being done but agree the benefits are probably mainly psychological.

I hadn't even thought abut travel insurance going forward.  I was hoping that would go to our (well mine mainly) happy place, Disneyland Paris for a few days about this time next year.  We were hoping to go in April as it will b our 40th anniversary but thought putting it off until September might fit in better with any treatment.  But insurance never crossed my mind ....

Anyway we will try to make this years holiday a little oasis in all the worry and deal with whatever awaits us when we get back Slight smile

  • Thank you Brian.  I honestly think we both need a break so what you say makes perfect sense Slight smile

  • Hello D4me

there is a link on the MacMillan site for discussing travel insurance, I think. Brian will be able to help, possibly? My husband was on the curative pathway and our bank insurance would not cover him until RT completed. As soon as the RT was finished they put him back on cover nut then the oncologist advised us not to go until 6-8 weeks after the end of RT in case problems arose as a result of the RTt. The first holiday we had after all that was the best holiday ever!
