Biopsy under general anaesthetic

So it’s been 5 weeks since my husbands biopsy and today he had to have a pre op assessment to have another biopsy under general anaesthetic.  I thought during this appointment someone would say what the original results were, but she just said she just has information to do a pre op assessment for a prostate biopsy under general anaesthetic.  I have tried to get some information from urology and even GP as to what was found in the first biopsy and why he needs another one.  But there doesn’t seem to be anyone who can tell me.  I finally had a call back at half 5 this evening and the person I spoke to said she can’t see anything and I will have to speak to the consultant, although I have been trying to get a response all week with no luck.  Has anyone got any idea as to why he would need another biopsy or any idea of what is going on.

  • What type of biopsy was the first one. It may have been trans-rectal with a limited number of samples.

A biopsy under a general anaesthetic will probably be a trans-perineal template biopsy involving many more samples (normally 24).

I had a a trans-perineal template biopsy under a local anaesthetic so I don't understand why they are planning a general.

Normally one biopsy is enough for a diagnosis so it is a bit confusing as to why they want to do a second.

Keep us informed and wish your OH good luck as one biopsy is enough for most men.

  • Just read your profile and sounds like they didn't complete the first biopsy due to your husbands blood pressure.

Doing a second under a general anaesthetic may give them more control over your husbands vitals and avoid any detrimental effects due to anxiety.

Hope you get some answers soon including the results of the first biopsy.

  • Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I think logically it is just that the first biopsy wasn’t completed.  It’s been such a long wait and almost impossible to get a response from anyone from urology, so I panicked a bit. It’s funny because every time there is a new appointment made all of the original worry sets back in, despite managing to keep it all in perspective between appointments.  My husband definitely agrees that one prostate biopsy is enough for any man.

  • Look on the positive side. Your OH's PSA is not sky high, the DRE is normal and his MRI is PIRADS 4.

If he does have cancer its likely to be both treatable and curable.

Waiting during diagnosis is often the worst part of the cancer journey. I've gone through it more than once. I had a false alarm in my 50s which didn't involve a biopsy. In 2020 I had both rectal and perineal biopsies which were clear then in 2023 I had another perineal biopsy which found my current cancer. Every time I was extremely anxious.
