Good Morning everyone,
My OH completed his doceataxel 6 weeks ago, and now continues with lifelong Zoladex injections and Darolutamide.
The cancer is deemed 'stable' after a CT scan, which is a huge positive.
However... the last few weeks he has noticed that his legs swell below the knee, and he'd begun snoring a lot, to the point that I have slept in another room.
We thought the snoring was because of increased weight, especially around the neck area, but now he has stopped taking steroids and is more mobile, the weight would be lost quite quickly.
Yesterday, he was quite concerned about the appearance of his ankles and so we went to the cancer clinic and after blood tests and an ECG, the consultant (not OH's usual one) said he should stop the Darolutamide, as this can be a side effect, water retention and even cardiac function. He thought the snoring could be as a result of fluid around the heart.
OH is very worried, as in his mind, the Darolutamide is one of the 2 things keeping his cancer at bay. Is there an alternative?
He's been asked to return to the hospital this morning and is very anxious.
Thankyou for reading, as always.
Hi Jess40 sorry to hear that your OH is having a bad reaction to the Darolutamide. There are alternatives but all drugs come with side effects. I have been on Zoladex for 8 years and it is still keeping my PSA down. You can read my history by clicking on my name or avatar. Try not to worry and just concentrate on enjoying life. I know it’s not easy but you are where you are. We have a very good life, not quite as we planned but much better than it might have been had treatments not advanced so much.
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
Thanks David.
OH is again very low in mood. He's gone from being a very fit and active man in early 60's playing sports regularly to someone who is taking medication to counteract side effects of another medication.
I understand completely what you're saying, but from having a calm life with good health, now we just seem to bounce from one concern or chaos to another.
The months go by, and we're still reeling from the changes
All the best.
OH spent most of yesterday at the hospital, 2 consultants, 2 opinions!
He had an ECG and that was fine, which was a huge relief, also an ultrasound to check for blood clots in his legs, this too, thankfully, showed nothing.
He's been given water tablets, and see how he does in the next week, and told to continue with the Darolutamide. Fingers crossed that his legs return to normal soon, he's having bother getting his boots on, and being comfortable in them.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
