Referral to Mri timeframe

Hi all,

I live in the Belfast area and was referred for an MRI 2nd July on basis of PSa of 17.

Today I rang the hospital of my referral and was told MRI could take another 10 weeks- possibly another 6 for results.

Depending on those results then maybe Biopsy- at this rate of going after Halloween before I hear.

I realise the NHS is stretched but this seems exceptionally long. I know times depend on your postcode but the wait is agonising- friends and family tell you not to worry but....

  • Hello Wave tone1

Your psa level is quite elevated, I would think 10 weeks is a very long time to wait for a mri scan.....we are from Scotland, my details are on my profile, we are 5 weeks from psa results to where we are now......bone scan, ct scan, diagnosis, 2 appts with Urology.

Waiting is awful but we do need to be our best advocates! I would ask to be informed of any cancellation appts, question the wait again, I am not sure how it all works in Belfast, maybe the GP could help with chasing up the scan.

There will be many here to offer advice, I am fairly new to all this! Good luck Heart️

  • You're a lot further on thank goodness.

I have rang appointments twice and have my name down for a cancellation but as you can imagine they are few and far between.

    Thanks for replying

  • Hi. It does seem a long wait, which from experience any wait seems a long worrying wait. My PSA  was 21 ,quickly  referred to consultant,  saw him in under 2 weeks. He did a internal examination then arranged a MRI 3 weeks later  then the long 6 week wait for a biopsy,  then another 7 week wait to see my consultant with the diagnosis,  confirming  they have found 2 growths and due to back and leg pains, quickly arranged a bone scan,  thankfully it was still contained in the prostate,  that was the worst wait ever, difference from curable to just keeping my alive , from appointment with my doctor to been treated and cured with radiotherapy was 10 months. The most important thing to remember keep faith and stay positive and trust the team involved.  good luck

  • Hello

I would take your issues of the delay up with the Public health Agency : email - complaints@pha@hscni.net

Tell them of the deal in your cancer diagnosis and ask them to bring the MRI/Biopsy forward.

I hope you get some results.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks I will definitely look into that
