Hello
my dads 77 and was diagnosed with prostrate cancer back in April it’s in his prostrate and locally advanced but not spread
He started hormone tablets for 28 days then he’s had 1 injection which lasts 6 months
we’re currently waiting for him to start radiotherapy in August
everyday for 4 weeks
last week he had a review at the GPs the nurse did a blood test we’re not sure what for and this morning they have rang to ask him to book an appt with his GP to discuss his results
were quite worried but is this normal?
could they just be checking to see if the hormones are working
or just getting him ready for the radiotherapy
thanks sorry it’s a bit long winded
Hello Lesley (Lesleymak77)
Nearly all cancer reviews are carried out by your hospital and before he starts his radiotherapy they will ask him for a PSA test and he will be "invited" in to Radiology for a "planning scan" prior to starting radiotherapy.
I would think the GP visit may well have been an annual MOT where they have run a full blood test checking everything from kidney function to HBA1C (diabetic blood sugar). If you are in England and he has the NHS App (with full access) it's possible his results are available to view.
I do hope this helps.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Brian
thank you yes I’m in England I did want to download the app, but my dad didn’t want me to
We go to clatterbridge on the 1st August for a scan to decide what area they will do the radiotherapy on no word yet when it starts but I’m hoping it will be very soon after
yes this blood test was carried out with the practice nurse she checked blood pressure weight etc
and took blood it’s probably just me worrying as it’s all new and we still don’t really know what’s happening
thank you for the reply x
It is normal practice for a blood test provided to the GP for you to be asked to call and arrange an appointment to discuss the results.
In my GP's surgery, if it is something dramatic they don't faff around and the GP will call you direct rather than wait around for results.
I think that you are in the "normal practice" end of the spectrum, but of course, what happens of me in my neck of the woods might not be the same as your area.
Where blood tests are requested by the team treating me for prostate cancer, they go straight to that team. I usually have to annoy them to get the results for myself.
It feels like it might be related to something else, such as another medication your dad is on, or if the hormone therapy crosses over with something else.
Steve
Changed, but not diminished.
Thank you for the reply
I think after all that’s happened over the last few months we naturally just fear the worst
hopefully it’s something and nothing I suspect it’s his kidney functions as they weren’t great to start with
Hello Lesley (Lesleymak77)
Steve (mstev2) has covered most of the points in his post above.
The appointment at Clatterbridge (a centre of excellence for cancer treatment) should be the planning scan and he should get a list of the dates and times for his treatment at the same time.
Feel free to ask any questions - however trivial, you will get answers.
Best wishes - Brian.
