Cumulative effects of Prostate-3

Hi,

I am just about to have my third Prostate-3 injection of a 2 year course and I have experienced many of the documented side effects to one degree or another. What I am having difficulty finding out is how these side effects may progress over time. My main concern is the change in my overall level of fitness. I'm a regular runner and up to starting Prostate-3, I was able to run 5 km in 30 mins. I finished my radiotherapy course on 23rd May and I needed a couple of weeks rest after that but I've started up my running again.  I've restarted with just 3.2 km runs and will only get back to my 5 km run when I get back to somewhere near a 10 kph pace. At the moment, I'm managing about 8.5 kph. The hot weather isn't helping though I go out early to avoid the real heat but if there is any recovery, it is pretty slow. What I'm trying to find out is if my attempts to recover my running speed are being thwarted by a cumulative effect of the injections. I enjoy my runs but am I just going to get slower and slower over the next 18 months?

Cheers

  • Hi  that is an interesting question.  I have been on HT for a long time and don’t think it has been cumulative.  Other treatments have definitely added to fatigue, but once finished recovery comes back.  My gut feeling is that you will slowly recover but maybe not to peak levels, but you won’t know unless you try.  Please let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Thanks for that.  I will keep trying to maintain my fitness level.

  • I've been a keen runner before treatment, running two 10k mid week and a long run (15k + ) over the weekend. Since starting HT (I'm on prostap 3 and Abiraterone) my stamina and speed vanished, I think it took about 6 months to level out but the first few months were very demoralising as every run is slower than the previous. I've had to change my training to be more weight lifting focused to keep my muscle mass as with my runs only (plus cycling and swimming) it was disappearing. I currently run two 5k a week, substantially slower than before, and two weight lifting sessions a week.

I would keep your runs, at whatever speed you can, but run by feel rather than previous times. I would add weight training if you can, as it's substantially more effective than running in keeping muscle while on HT. If you can I would recommend taking a personal trainer to build a plan for you and make sure you're doing the movement right, if you have no prior lifting experience. I am by a bit more extreme due to my Abiraterone, but I believe this holds true for any HT.

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks a lot for this. Things are not quite so bad for me, my times are improving albeit very slowly (down by one minute over a month). I will keep up my running but your suggestion of personal trainer is a good idea. I'm a member of David Lloyds so I can do that easily. Relaxed

  • For those of us who do a lot of sports, this drop in fitness is a big change,  my very first post on this forum over a year ago was exactly on this topic -   Hello / Fitness and Hormone Therapy

I since managed to slightly change my state of mind, and rather than be angry about how slow I am and how short my runs/cycles are compared to what they used to be, I just try to enjoy running and cycling to whatever level I'm able to do them.it was a difficult change to make but worth while.
