I’ve had most if the possible side effects from HT, which started 18 months ago) - fatigue, weight gain, muscle loss, ED and hot flushes. I’m coping well but the worst thing for me is the hot flushes. I can get them 5 or 6 times every night and, of course, I wake up. There is a pattern. I wake up and then a couple of minutes later I get the hot flushes. I’ve never been a great sleeper so I have difficulty getting back to sleep. It’s really effecting my quality of life now.
I’ve tried Morning Primrose and Sage (suggested by my Urology Nurse) but there’s no improvement. Any suggestions.
Hello Coltrane
I know where you are with the HT side effects - I've had the lot and some not even listed!!
If Sage and Morning Primrose aren't working your GP can prescribe Medroxyprogesterone - link here:

i hope this helps.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hello Polly (Polly1912)
We are all different but fatigue was the first side effect I had followed by ED and loss of libido. The hot flushes came next and mine were bad!!
I hope they work for your partner.
Best wishes - Brian.

As soon as I started the hormone tablets within 2 days I started getting hot flushes, mine have been worse during day, once I had the testosterone injections they got really bad , once second ok then bang sweating from head to toe, now nearly 3 months on from final radiotherapy session, they gradually got fewer till probably testing fate, this week they seem to have stopped. Luckily the consultant stopped any further injections. I used sage tablets from Harrold and Barrett, didn't stop them but definitely eased them
Hi Coltrane, I have been on this journey since August 2024, I have Zoladex injected into my stomach once every three months, bloods done every three months checking that I am still ok to take Apalutamide orally once a day. I have found in this time that dependent on what I drink and eat, how that affects the hot flushes, Of course all the good stuff, which we are told is the bad stuff is the main villain where hot flushes are concerned, coffee being a big player, next to dairy.
I have moved to an alkaline diet ( easily found on the internet ) which has helped me out a lot, when I go to bed I take a large glass of fresh water with me so when i get woken up, either to use the toilet or because of a hot flush, I take a mouthful of water, swish it around my mouth swallow and wait for the hot flush to go. This has worked for me, especially changing my diet.
Progress for me is that I am starting Radiotherapy next week, once a week for 6 weeks, fingers crossed.
Hi polly. Yes, the effects do kick in early. Coz the meds start acting on the testes and reduce the production of testosterone. This low levels of testosterone is wjat causes the hot flush. So the positive side is that he responding well to the treatment. His testo levels are dropping off sharply.
