My partner had a prostate biopsy 2 weeks ago he has now been invited to a meeting at our local hospital with a specialist urology nurse, is there a difference between this and seeing a doctor or consultant

  • Hi Sue

Suppose depends what has been said previously and what the biopsy results are

What are his other stats IE: PSA , last few if u have them and what does the Mri say, is tumour contained?

Have they already talked about treatment options although biopsy needed to confirm it is cancer.

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • PSA has been elevated since Christmas on each test, Biopsy found a growth but we have not had any details this is the first meeting following Biopsy

  • Biopsy will give u a Gleeson score, the lower the better. 6 or 7 rather than 8+. 8 and above shows more aggressive type.

But it's the MRI that will tell u more about where any tumour actually is and size of tumour

MRI normally.comes before biopsy so I presume he had one some weeks ago, do u know what it said ?

    Steve

  • yes MRI was 4 weeks ago and they found growth, which was why sent for Biopsy not aware of being given Gleeson score, but I will be at his appointment on Friday making sure I get any details

  • So when U go get hard copies of the MRI report and Biopsy,  come back on here with results and there are loads of people that will be able to advise .

Presume they will talk about treatment options as well.

See how it goes but if you're not happy with the nurse then U can always ask to see a Dr.

Should be ok if a specialist nurse

    Good luck

    Steve

  • Hello Sue (

Welcome to the group although I am so sorry to find you here.

A prostate biopsy is always undertaken by the urology department. Once your results from the biopsy and any scans are known then the hospital will have a MDT meeting (which will include Consultants and Doctors) and decide the best course of treatment for your partner based on the results. At this point he may well be given options of surgery or seeing an oncologist.

I would say at this point don't be rushed into any form of treatment until you know your partners results and you know what is on offer. Here's a list of questions you may want to ask your specialist urology nurse:

If you are looking for information please don't use Dr Google but trusted sources, Macmillan, Prostate Cancer UK and Cancer Research UK. There is also a cracking free booklet here:

I hope the above helps - feel free to ask any questions, however trivial.

    Best wishes - Brian
