This is really not important on a scale of things but we need to make a decision.
We have got a holiday cottage booked in Kent for the first week in September. We need to pay the balance on the booking in 2 weeks time.
LH had his MRI last night and the wait begins for his results. With PSA of 57 it seems quite possible that he will need treatment and it may have spread.
My question is what is the likelihood of him having started treatment by the first week of September? If he has is he still likely to be able to go? It is not just the money but he has been so looking forward to it and it could be just what he needs. We stand to lose the deposit either way if we don't go (approx £400) but we stand to lose a further £600 if we pay and don't go. I am torn between paying and hoping for the best and cutting our losses and keeping the £600 for, hopefully, a break another time.
Can anybody give me any idea what the time frame is likely to be for any treatment to start please?
I know in the great scheme of things this does not matter a bit but I still need to make this decision.
Many thanks for your help
Hello Dogs4me . The experts are normally good at working round holidays and at the moment your husband has not had his biopsy. There will then be a little wait to get a plan tailored for your husband. Hormone therapy is the first step which will put the cancer into hibernation and will shrink it before radiotherapy if that is an option and from what I understand there is usually at least a 3 month wait in the UK. If the experts decide that chemotherapy is required then this is best started within 12 weeks of initiating hormone therapy so you still have time to have your holiday at the beginning of September.
I would say, book your holiday and recharge your batteries.
Thank you so much for your reply: it is very helpful.
He has been told that his next appointment will be at a 'one stop' clinic. He will have a meeting with the consultant in the morning and any further scans or tests that they might want to do. He will then have any biopsies in the afternoon. Are they likely to start the HT on that day if they feel certain he needs it or will they wait for the results of the biopsy? Not sure when this appointment will be but they said it should be within the next 3 weeks. Just thinking about the 12 weeks you mentioned - it will be 12 weeks tomorrow that we would come back from our holiday so I guess it should be OK?
I think a recharge of batteries is something we could both do with!
Thank you again :)
Yes, if they are certain from the MRI that he does have cancer then there is a very good chance that he will start with Bicalutamide which is a tablet taken for a couple of weeks before he is given the injection/ implant to counter the flare that they can cause. Which ADT he is given can vary and is partly dependent on any other ailments he might have. The 12 weeks will start from when he has his first tablet so you still have time for a holiday -the 12 weeks is only pertinent if they decide that chemotherapy is needed at this stage.
