Hi all

LH has not yet been formally diagnosed but with a PSA of 57 a cancer diagnosis is very likely.

Today he s going for an MRI at our local hospital (Churchill, Oxford) and it seems that they use a Multi Parametric MRI Scanner which can also scan the bones for  cancer apparently.  Has anyone any experience of this?  Is it a reliable as having separate scans?

Many thanks for your help.

  • An MRI is at least as good as a bone scan for picking up bone mets provided the area scanned covers the areas where metastases are usually found. If it encompasses the chest, upper abdomen and down to the upper thighs then they will be checking other areas of possible spread as well. A PSMA PET scan is the gold standard at the moment but not as freely available.

  • Thank you. That is good to know. I have checked and the hospital does have the facility to do PSMA PET scans so if there is any doubt I guess they will follow up with this. I try to keep telling myself that we are lucky that they are a centre of excellence when it comes to cancer but it's hard to feel lucky atmo .....

  • All of us who are diagnosed are, in a sense, lucky, because we will be treated, and kept going.

The unlucky ones are the ones who ignore any symptoms and are diagnosed when it really has gone wild.
