I was diagnosed with prostate cancer grade5 and Gleason score 9 4+5 had my pet ct scan and they decided on hormone therapy, they didn’t say any other option . Should I been given other options or is this there best decision.
Good afternoon.
As someone who has recently undergone investigations, diagnosis and treatment I will give you My Personal perspective on the treatment decision process.
Throughout my whole life I have striven to be in control of decision making, there is nothing worse than feeling someone is controlling you. However having said that I was desperate for my urology team to take my decision on treatment out of my hands but unfortunately they were not prepared to do this. It was only after a discussion with my GP and subsequently my consultant following the treatment was I informed that the decision I made was definitely the best for me. I do not understand this. I suppose it may well be that this removes any responsibility of the urology team should I begin making noises about not being happy about the route I took. You must! And I repeat you must discuss this with your consultant and make sure he or she has given you every option available for you and then ask him or her to explain why the option of HT was made.
Good luck and keep us informed. This group is an amazing resource for both patients and their family.
Hello Kom and welcome. The Gleason 9 is only part of the story as it can encompass a diagnosis from being curable with different routes to get there to being incurable but treatable with a different set of possible treatments. With most of them hormone therapy is only the first stage to put the cancer into hibernation thus giving time for the experts to come up with a full plan tailored for the patient.
