When I was deciding which treatment to go for I was told that RT wouldn't affect my immune system. When I signed the consent form for RT it said the site was Prostate / Seminal vesicles, but neither the short or long term side effects mentioned immune system.
I am 68 and generally fit and healthy, but have just received an email from NHS inviting me for a Spring covid jab because 'your NHS record suggests you may have a weakened immune system'.
Would be interesting to here other peoples thoughts before contacting my GP for clarification.
There is nothing to worry about Agent99 . The radiotherapy can trigger an immune response to the Cancer but also might affect the production or cells in the bone marrow for several months after being zapped which results in a lowered immune system. There are no extra precautions to take except to steer clear of people with bugs. The COVID vaccination is a precaution, as are the flu jabs and RSV and shingles jabs for those eligible.
Hello Agent99
You are correct that the NHS consider you to have a weakened immune system after radiotherapy for the next 18 months (well it was 18 months when I had my radiotherapy in early 2023)
You do tend to get priority calls for Covid and Flu vaccinations during this period.
Best wishes - Brian.
