Hi,
Can anyone tell me if they need incontinence pants to start with after their operation to have their prostate removed or are pads all that is needed to do the job. I have an enlarged prostate (about 6 times the normal size) and I'm concerned about extra leakage to start with until my bladder gets used to not having pressure against it.
Also are boxers or tighter fitting pants the best when using the pads?
Kind regards,
Jumping Jack
My husband didn't know that men's pads and pants existed and was also embarrassed to buy them for himself until I marched him to the supermarket shelves and showed him the large range available. If there wasn't a need there wouldn't be such a selection.
I've never heard of a rustle free mattress cover. I have now!

You are "spot on" again!
Hope you are both keeping well.

Hi
One year on from husbands Prostatectomy he no longer requires pads. He did experience some incontinence but think kegel excercises helped him recover which he still continues to do to date. Like youhe had an enlarged prostate 100cc, size of a large lemon apparently!
which was one of the reasons for opting for surgery.
We found Morrisons own brand of incontinence pads the preferred one to use as they had side barriers which help to prevent any leakage and gave husband more confidence. Think they were mid absorbency. Wearing of tight fitting trunks and also used net fixation pants worn under pants (we think?) purchased from Incontinence Choice website they also sell many different brands at reasonablish prices.
Think it's a matter of trial and error what suits one may not suit all, kind of thing. We also purchased a silentnight waterproof mattress protector from Dunelm which seemed fairly comfortable without the crinkling noise & giving reassurance at the same time. Particularly useful when he had a catheter as he had a couple of incidents with leakage once when he knocked the tap.
Wish you all the best with the Op and hope you soon recover.X
Hi Ann33,
Thank you for your reply. It's great to hear your husband is doing well and is now pad free.
I have purchased a silentnight mattress cover just case i too have any little accidents.
My large prostate was also a factor in me deciding to go for the operation (I think mines about 120ish). Another huge factor for making my decision is that it has already taken an entire generation of my family (my mum and both her brothers). That's the one thing that really upsets me. The fact that it took all of them and now it wants me. No way, the puck stops here (i won't say what I think of it, but it's not polite).
I think you're right and it will be a big of trial and error and find what works best. It's definitely about getting your confidence.
Thanks for telling about the website too, i hadn't of it so I will check it out xx
Hi Jumping Jack
Gosh 120cc size of an orange maybe? Wonder if that's a record breaker! my husband also has family history of PC but at least our Sons can be on guard and more aware of PC and at least the word is getting out there more and more!
Once again hope you sail through it and get to safer seas.
I have heard of bigger, a lot bigger so it makes the mind boggle a bit.
Yes, it's good that your sons can be pc aware as it is so treatable these days. A nurse told me that if you are going to get cancer, that's the one to have. I'm also told that the hospital I'm having it done at is one of the best in the country.
When I told my mates about my diagnosis. One of them thanked me as it give him the wake up call he needed and he was going to get himself checked out (he has a bit of history in that depth too).
My prostate gland was described as "chunky" by the oncologist. That was about 120 cc, so I suspect that neither of us are approaching maximum.
I have seen studies which compare treatments for prostates over 150 cc. (e.g. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0090429522001480)
So, unfortunately, neither of us can claim a record. Another claim to fame out of the window.
Steve
Changed, but not diminished.
Im sure the urologist who did my biopsy said the biggest he'd seen was somewhere between 400 - 500cc. So yeah, no records broken here.
