My PSA result today.

Hi everyone.

I’m just after your thoughts of my unfolding path relating to my prostate cancer. Had prostatormy last may. Gleason 3+4 T2. I had positive margins after the op. Unfortunately my PSA post op was 0.11 and then hit 0.23 three months later. I then had a month of radiotherapy aimed around the prostate bed on consecutive days bar weekends. About an hour ago I called my Nurse, PSA is undetectable. However I have also just had my last injection, a 6 month course of hormone treatment. I did ask can this be a false reading as the h/t may be the reason PSA is untraceable and the next PSA test in 3 months might not be as pleasing…She agreed this could be the case but did say today’s news was reassuring. I just would like any thoughts on this.

Thank you.

  • Hello

All sounds good to me. The theory behind the treatment is that the Hormone Therapy puts the cancer to sleep and stops any further growth and it going "walkabout". The Radiotherapy then kills of the sleeping cancer cells.

Undetectable PSA is the result you want. That's 100% where you want to be.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Brian . Maybe I’m overthinking it. Only reason psa is down is due to the h/t and maybe it will start climbing now it’s finished?

  • Hello

Yes, I think you are. Your prostate is the main source of PSA in the body (there are a couple of other places that produce a "small" amount of PSA)  so No Prostate = No PSA and because the Radiotherapy should have killed the "escapees" an undetectable PSA is what you expect.

Your reaction is understandable though - there are always "what if's" with cancer. At least if you cut your finger, you put a plaster on it and 10 days later you can see it's healed. With cancer you need to trust your team and your results.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Ok Brian, once again thanks for your reply.
