Hi all,
Husband aged 57 - T3a - PSA 5.6 - Gleason 3+4
We spoke to the oncologist yesterday and asked lots of questions which she answered very comprehensively.
My OH is having EBRT & 6 months hormone therapy. I asked about Brachy-boost but she advised that due to where the cancer is located the risks outweigh the minimal benefits.
We decided not to go the surgery route as due to OH having a short urethra & where the cancer is there would be a high chance of complications afterwards - incontinence as it would be hard to re-attach the urethra.
Husband has just picked up his hormone tablets so we will see what this rollercoaster brings us next !
Hope everyone else is getting on okay.
Best Wishes
Hi Redrose25 - with those statistics I think that EBRT and 6 months HT will be sufficient for cure. AW
Thank you - the chat with the oncologist helped us feel more positive.
Interesting to note that brachytherapy was ruled out: HDR can be quite intense, and LDR needs the gland to be within a certain size / position of the cancer in relation to other structures (including urethra). Sounds like you have a great onco. AW
Yes she made us feel confident in what she was proposing - and I did ask a lot of questions - lol ! OH just this minute taken his first Bicalutamide tablet so here goes.........
You sound very positive, and I think I used that very phrase on this site when I took my first tablet! You will both feel SO much better having started hormone therapy - expect a steep drop in PSA as you are effectively putting the cancer to sleep, whilst those clever radiologists plan their LINAC patterns to kill the cancer. All the rushing to get diagnosed is over: you need a couple of months for the hormone therapy to thoroughly shrink and weaken the cancer before radiotherapy. AW
Yes she said radiotherapy in August so it shrinks and they have a "smaller target". I think I feel positive because treatment has started and the oncologist gave me hope. Its still all rubbish though but at least we are on the treadmill now. :-)
