Steroid induced diabetes

Hello, does anyone have experience of steroids (prescribed to reduce inflammation of tumour) causing diabetes. My husband now has to take insulin to counteract the rise in blood sugar that the steroids cause.  It’s another complication which is causing distress as sugar levels seem to be fluctuating.  Any reassurance would be very much appreciated

  • Hello

Although I haven't been on steroids - I am aware that they can cause "steroid induced diabetes". This can be a set back but more often than not it's only while the steroids are in your system although in some cases it can become permanent.

You can help yourself by making changes in your diet - cut out white bread, fizzy drinks, sugary desserts, butter alcohol and many processed foods.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi, Help

my husband had trouble with steriod induced diabetes, we got to talk to a diabetic nurse specialist which helped us know end. He was put on medication because his levels were so high.

At the moment he is off the medication and having another blood test next month to see if it has gone away.

We were completely thrown by him becoming diabetic.

  • Hello, thank you so much for your reply, I will see if my husband can get some support from a diabetic specialist. I totally agree when you said you were completely thrown by your husband becoming diabetic. That’s exactly how we have felt. Hope your husband’s blood test shows it has gone away.  With best wishes
