Hi my husband had enlarged prostate for 4 years resulting in a catheter for 3 years which was finally removed in August last year after a TURPS procedure. Unfortunately cancer cells were found as a result of the procedure but biopsy results and MRI were good, believed to be low risk, group 2 and a PSA test 3 months after TURPS was 0.74 so AS was decided best course of action. My husband had first AS PSA test in March and PSA is now 3.8 which seems quite a rise in 5 months, albeit I know it’s not high by others PSA results but are we right to be concerned at this rise, UTI and Prostatitis have been ruled out, repeat PSA in 6 weeks. I just feel very anxious about this.

  • Hi Pollensa

It's probably too early to say because 3.8 is not far off normal, perhaps very low at .74 cos of previous procedures , could just be a blip

Do u have any more PSA tests done before the .74?

    Best wishes

  • Hi prior to TUROS they were 2.1 but on 2 different meds for enlarged prostate for 3 years, prior to that 4-4.5. Consultant said 0.74 should be no surprise as procedure cut away large area of prostate. Like you say 3.8 near normal but just seems a high percentage rise in 5 months. Seeing Consultant on 23rd to ask about biopsy which was an option in November but AS option was hubby’s choice

  • Ok well the next couple of PSA's will be crucial, fingers crossed will stabalize at about 4 ish.

AS ok as long as any tumour not too large or near capsule edge

  • Hi Pollensa2025

Some activities within 48 hrs of the PSA blood test can give rise to a raised PSA reading (ejaculation / riding a bike) or even a urine infection so may have affected the result.  Even if these aren't the culprits it's good that you have an appointment with the consultant next week to discuss matters.
