First steps towards diagnosis

Hello. My husband (55) with a PSA of 5.5 has just had an MRI which shows two lesions of concern, both contained within the prostate. He's been told it's 60% it is likely to be cancer. He's got a biopsy booked in next week.

He's received an appointment booking to discuss the results 3 weeks after the biopsy. The nurse told him it'll then be a few weeks/months researching treatment options with various specialists.

My question is, this timetable all feels very relaxed! How (until the biopsy results are known) can we be sure it's not fast advancing/aggressive? Waiting 3 weeks after the biopsy to even know what we are dealing with is going to be agonising.

We are due to go on holiday a month from now, but I am seriously considering suggesting cancelling it and trying to get on top of next steps with treatment etc.

It's such a shock. And even though we think (hope) we've been lucky to spot it early there is still so much to find out before any degree of optimism feels warranted.

  • Hello

    Sadly the diagnostic path and waiting for results and a treatment path are a nightmare and once he has a diagnosis and a treatment plan you will settle down to the "new normal".

    A PSA of 5.5 is quite low and most prostate cancer is slow growing - so 4 weeks from now to biopsy results should be fine. If I were you I would be away on the holiday - don't let cancer get in the way (I am a Gleason 9, with an initial PSA of 182, so aggressive and I only had 16 weeks holiday last year!) as I type this I am on holiday in mid Wales waiting for the rain Sunglasses!

    Here's our guide to the Prostate Biopsy;

    The Prostate Biopsy.

    Remember 98% of men with prostate cancer die WITH it not OF it.

    Feel free to ask any questions, however trivial. Do let us know his biopsy results when you get them.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi  , I am totally with Brian, get the biopsy out of the way and have a great holiday and come back ready to kick the cancer into touch.  A few weeks won’t matter I think.  David

  • Hi  - I agree with the above, insofar as you’re “lucky” to have found the (possible) cancer early.  Presumably your dear husband was asymptomatic?  definitely stay with the booked holiday: the medical team will be happy to work around the dates.   AW

  • I am with all the others.

  • It's the first weeks waiting that is worst,  my journey all happened very quickly having had the PSA blood test which came back with a 21 , you are lucky to only have to wait 3 weeks for biopsy results,  I had to wait 7 weeks for results but I was resigned to knowing I had got cancer, then the bone scan to check it hadn't spread outside the prostate, as you can imagine the wait for the all clear on it contained is agonising as its the difference between cure or prolonging life. now having had my 8th  radiotherapy treatment today with Worcester Royal Hospital being so caring and putting me at ease It's just another day out. can't fault them any way or form. Hope all goes well for your Husband

  • Thank you to everyone who has replied to this post. I'm very grateful for your sage advice. It's weird being in a position of not knowing - about so much. But this is at the beginning of what I imagine is going to be a pretty steep learning curve. It's reassuring knowing there's a group of people here with lots of clear-eyed experience capable of providing such good advice.
