Hi , 6 months after radiotherapy I’m getting bloated in the stomach area and not much bowel movement maybe not going for 2 to 3 days anyone else had this problem before any help I would appreciate thanks Paul

  • Good morning.

I haven't had this problem, but then I'm only a month and a half out of radiotherapy.

However, I thought I'd look, and I did find this, which might give you some guidance -

    https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/treatment/types-of-treatment/radiotherapy/pelvic-radiotherapy/bowel-problems-after-pelvic-radiotherapy#:~:text=Pelvic%20radiotherapy%20often%20causes%20bowel,months%20or%20years%20after%20treatment.

I also had an experience which may have some relevance. When I was actually in the middle of the radiotherapy I hurt my back. I was prescribed codeine, which caused constipation. The usual treatments for constipation cause wind. Neither of those are conducive to happy times on the radiotherapy table.

The radiographers told me to increase my fluid intake even more and to drink peppermint tea.

That worked, but meant that I spent half my life in the toilet when not being treated and I now hate peppermint tea.

Just to illustrate that changes in diet and drug therapy can produce exactly the same results.

That Macmillan page above gives some hints about what to and when to get the medics involved.

Hope you bring it all under control.

Others with actual experience will be along soon.

    Steve

    Changed, but not diminished.
  • Good morning Paul. Steve has given some good information and to add to it I would suggest adding something like Greek yogurt or a probiotic into the diet along with good old fashioned oats. These as well as a varied diet can help reset the gut biome which will promote more regular bowel movements and hopefully reduce the bloated feeling.
