Hello a quick question to those’d having had surgery- Does the bladder sphincter work after recovery - obviously we do pelvic floor exercises to strengthen that whole area to in prep and after removal of catheter.

  • Hello

It's our understanding that during Prostatectomy the bladder sphincter is removed shortening the urethra. This is something checking all pro & cons of Op vs other treatments we had not realised.

OH was advised to practice pelvic floor excercises before and continue after catheter removal.OH had good results with continence during Prostatectomy recovery, however he then needed RT/HT as cancer was found in a seminal vesicle. This worsened his bladder control a little however he doesn't require pads but seems more urgent bladder wise.

Hope someone can come forward to confirm with regards to bladder sphincter removal.

Wishing you all the best with your Op. X

  • My partner had surgery 10 days ago, we were expecting some incontinence when he had his catheter removed but he hasn't had any issues. Not even a tiny but of leakage. We are pleasantly surprised!!

  • Hi

Urinary continence depends on the internal, involuntary sphincter and the voluntary striated external sphincter. The internal sphincter is removed during all forms of prostatectomy, as it is anatomically at the junction of the prostate and bladder. Performing specialized Kegel exercises after surgery to strengthen muscles enables patients to control their external sphincter and gain continence (dryness).  This can take several weeks to several months.

Return of normal erectile function depends on a number of physical and psychological factors, including the type of prostatectomy (unilateral or bilateral; nerve-sparing or non-nerve sparing, etc.). Function may return from one week to one year after surgery, It typically takes several months. A program of “penile rehabilitation,” using medications such as Viagra and/or vacuum pump, is recommended as part of the process to facilitate healing and return of erectile function. Additional factors that can affect erectile function include hypertension, diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, smoking and anxiety.
