Hip replacements and radiotherapy

Some months ago I did mention that I had some difficulty with getting radiotherapy treatment due to my two replacement hips. I have been going through all the paperwork that I collected on my journey and I am somewhat perturbed by the possible implications. Very briefly: I was told by one hospital that they could not do radiotherapy on me - "radiotherapy is not technically feasible". Another second hospital never mentioned any potential difficulties - and when I asked at my first treatment appointment with them, what problems my hips might cause, I was told "none whatsoever".  This might seem to be a disturbing case of a post-code lottery.

Could I just "bump" this subject and ask if any others, with replacement hips have had any radiotherapy problems along these lines. I understand that the "difficulty" is (may be) caused by interaction between the hip(s) and the the CT scan used in Planning and the daily CT scan during treatment. Why in one hospital - but not the other ? If it is "technically feasible" - why do some hospitals appear not to know this, even if they don't have the hardware/software to do it ?

(I finished my radiotherapy 4 months ago and everything now is looking quite hopeful.)

  • Hello Moonraker

My husband says he was asked if he had had any hip replacement surgery before his radiotherapy. As he hadn’t, we didn’t look further into this.

im sorry this is of little assistance to you but I wanted to make sure you had a reply and to keep your very important questioning at the top of the list!

I hope you get some answers soon!
