Currently lying in hospital bed at the Christie Manchester having arrived at 7am for the Op (RALP) . Surgeon said everything went OK, no complications. He had been keen to get me out same day but the Physio guys were to busy to do another release today,  and I hindsight I think I feel more comfortable with an overnight and I'm sure my wife does.

Not much in the way of pain so far but I'm probably still drugged up from the Op.

I just want to say a big THANKS to those who answered my original post on choosing treatment and also those who put the details of their journey in their profile. These were massively useful as were the conversations I had with an old workmate who had gone through the process.

When I get out and start my recovery I will fill in my profile and record my journey i the hope I can help others in a similar situation.

Thanks

Garry

  • Hello Gary (

Thanks for the update and I am pleased to operation has gone well (I am under Christies and can't fault the care and service I get).

I wish you all the best for a full recovery - please do keep us in the loop. At the same time don't be rushing anything!

  • Hi,

brilliant to hear everything went well. I must admit I was very happy to have an overnight stay in hospital after my surgery (18 days ago now). I wasn’t in pain and didn’t have any issues or difficulties, but the extra peace of mind for both me and my wife was great.

It will be good to hear your recovery journey. I blabbed here quite a bit over the first 10 days and it was great to talk and get feedback Grin

All the best for a speedy recovery. Just remember, listen to your body, if you feel tired, take a break! There is such a temptation to push things just that little bit quicker than needed. Don’t let impatience get you in trouble!

  • Thanks Brian,

Got to agree with you on Christies, everybody I have dealt with there has been very frank and open when discussing treatment and after care but always with a very positive attitude. I have only been home since Saturday but have already had 2 phone calls checking that everything thing is OK.

    Definitely a first class service.

  • Sounds similar to Addenbrookes. Had two calls in the first week to check after the surgery and put my mind at rest about the upcoming catheter appointment. Very helpful and reassuring! Glad you’re getting the same support!

  • Great to hear you are getting the support you deserve. I have not had one welfare check since my op which I find unbelievable.

  • Hi Al985,

Really Sorry to hear that,  I know how much I appreciated those calls.  It would be really great if we could all have the same support through this journey.

I'm off for my TWOC tomorrow, the start of another challenge - bit like joining my grandson in his toilet training. Fingers crossed

  • Hi Gary (Baldy) I’m currently lay in bed at Christie’s Manchester and I can agree with you regarding the staff and care received whilst here. Like you all went well, in no pain apart from tenderness of the area. Expecting to be discharged later today. Hope your recovery goes well

  • Hi Teulu,

Good to hear your op went well and your getting great care at Christie. When they come around and ask if you want any pain meds this morning- say yes, even if you are not sure you need them,  as you will be getting up and moving around today.

Best advice I got following my initial post was don't over do it when you get home, slow and steady does it with gradual increase in activity.

I hope your recovery goes well, the catheter can be a bit of a faff, but it's only for a week and at least it means you don't have to get up for a P in the night!

  • Update: got home yesterday still feeling good pain level between 1-10 around 2 and this is only when I stand up or move suddenly. Think I over did it yesterday and thought I could run before I can walk and probably got to comfortable and was active quite a bit in hospital before being released, had a lot of discomfort later last night after getting home, but all good now after a good nights rest which I didn’t have whilst on the ward, so lesson learnt slow and easy the way forward.

catheter not an issue and being removed next Wednesday the 9th, No issues with self medicating blood thinners either.

I have to give credit to all the staff that attended to me from start to finish at The Christie’s hospital and the Maggies care team, angels each and everyone of them, Even the surgeon who came to talk to me before I went down to theatre bent down and hugged me and said we will look after you which I thought was a wonderful thing to do.

my journey so far from the date I had my PSA test 12 Dec 2024 to now has been rapid and comforting and long may it continue during my recovery.
