I'm 54 and been diagnosed with prostate cancer.... Why the fuck me?? Truth be told I'm lucky, it's been diagnosed early and I have options. My psa has risen quite a bit in last 12 months and surgeons pushing me for surgery within the month.... Through mcmillan I've decided Brachtherapy and I'm about start in next couple of months so if anyone wants a chat or just support let me know and we'll
l get through this together, if I can help 1 fellow man then my jobs been done.. There's life after diagnosis
Hi Colin, yeh virtually identical to myself. When I was 1st diagnosed I was 100% for getting it removed, I just wanted the friggin cancer gone but after a few months and reading about the surgery itlf, potential side effects - real ones-and speaking to a few guys on here I've flipped and radiation is the way for me to personally go. I think for us both, right now and at our age and stage of caer then the success rate of either sbrt or Brachtherapy is on par if not even higher than surgery but much less evasive and in my opinion less side effects like urinary incontinence, erectile disfunion etc...but that's just my opinion and belief but each and everyone of us has that decision to make, when you make it think life gets that little easier
As you will see on my profile I had Brachytherapy at the end of November I am in No doubt that it was the best thing ever in helping to beat this thing even if a bit difficult to go through! But got over it very quickly Best of Luck
Wow, I only had LDR Brachytherapy and nothing else.. That choice you made must have been a difficult one, but looks like a good one..
Morning all, had my referral at The Christie in Manchester with the urologist, was actually early and excellent service as I've experienced throughout my treatment, she actually said that surgery for my tumor /score was like smashing a walnut with a sledgehammer, so all you guys like myself with gleason score of, 3+4 and fairly low psa don't despair... She said I'd probably be OK with AS for the foreseeable but tradition is an alternative. After speaking to her and the procedure I'm thinking of going down the sbrt /sabr route solely for the fact I don't have to be put under and similar success rate with my diagnosis. We're all different so choose carefully but be careful of surgeons pushing you for surgery when it's not warranted, it's a business after all so take time out to access what's important to you and please speak to the community on here who's here to help you..... As Iive been helped.. Making the call tomorrow to book sbrt at clatterbridge and u know what..... I'm feeling fuckin positive about it, doctors seem top of their game and genuinely give me confidence of beating this so let's start the process....im here for anyone that's needs help/advice as I know it's scary but my journey has been as positive as it can be, now onto the treatment phase.... Will keep you all posted
Hi Psmike - in your case, the fog appears to be lifting and you have resisted the urge to say “if in doubt, have it out “ …. The sledgehammer and walnut analogy is perfect. Potential Side effects are often overlooked in the panic to remove the cancer. AW
Well done, that’s the hard decision bit out of the way, would Christie’s not do the SBRT then ? and is it just that and nothing else. I was at Christie’s for my LDR Brachytherapy. It would be great if you could do the bio a bit like mine, then we can really help others but also understand ourselves the different side effects, or may you will be really lucky and have none. Anyway, well done again. I would have had that had I not chosen brachytherapy.
Hi Bluecloud1, not sure if chrisfies do sbrt but I'm in Liverpool anyway and clatterbridge is a centre of excellence so pretty lucky tbh. It'll be good for the forum for us to have different treatments and to post our journey as it'll help others who have this shite disease. Just for others on here.... When I saw the surgeon he had me pencilled in for surgery within the month and as she specialist sadi yesterday it was way to excessive for my prognosis so please guys take a bit of time out and explore all options, don't be bullied into thinking surgery is your only option. It may well be depending on the stage of your cancer but take a breath and ask questions. Good luck everyone
