Hi everyone

I have my operation to remove my prostate on Monday and after reading all the leaflets and online advice I cannot find any guidance on what type of incontinence products I will need straight after the operation and for when I go home; eg
  • Pants
  • Pads
  • Seat / bed covers
  • Flow rates
Any recommendations would be appreciated so many options and not wanting to spend a fortune and it not be used. (I do realise everyone will be different)
I have tried the eurology dept and they could not advise either.
Or will I get all this advice after surgery at the hospital?
cheers
  • Hello  . Firstly all the best for tomorrow. I can remember a helpful thread on this from  so have given you a link to it. My husband didn't have a Prostatectomy but does find Tena pads a good discreet brand for confidence if we are going out and at night. After radiotherapy he did have to upgrade to the pants at night for a little bit. A lot of men find a pair of joggers or loose fitting trousers help when you have the catheter.

Pads and what you need to know .

A waterproof mattress cover is a good idea for added security.

  • Hello There Fogster

My OH  had a Prostatectomy last April. Had catheter removed just over 2 weeks post op so no need for pads until then. Prostate Cancer UK issued a one off package containing pads, info etc on request from their website which was very helpful.

Purchased a waterproof mattress protector for any incidents pre and post catheter days. Once op scars had recovered a little wore tighter fitting pants when wearing pads for better security and peace of mind. Wearing of dark coloured joggers also helped incase of accidents (which never happened fortunately).

Husband did and still does the Kegel exercises which has helped in regaining his continence. He downloaded the Squeezy app to help with this as Recommended by urologist.

Wish you all the best for Monday and onwards. X

  • Good luck for the procedure hope that all goes well. I'd suggest going with Tena level 3 pads and see how you go. Ideally you will drop down to the level 2 then 1 as leakage gradually reduces.

    Best regards BM

  • Worth getting a supply in now.  I'm 6 weeks post TWOC and am mainly on Level 3 Tena pads but more recently I've experienced some supply issues with Boots Online and Tena Direct not having any stock of Level 3. Obviously this may have changed over the last few days so worth checking out. I had to get my most recent supply from Ocado.

At night I find Tena "Protective Underwear" really good and secure.  Saves wearing your normal pants to hold the pad in place.

I also use Boots "Stay Dry" Wet wipes.  They are specifically formulated for incontinence and help when you are out and about and need to freshen up below.

    Good luck with the operation.

  • Morning,

I got a freebie package from the hospital and also if you go on to prostate cancer U.K. website, you can get a freebie pack from them. Unfortunately every body is unique and every reaction is individual. During my nine days after surgery with the catheter in place, I had some bypass (leaks around the catheter). I was told It was fine. But needed a pad every day for those nine days (chose the freebie tena level 2 ones in the freebie pack). Most others I chatted to had no bypass.

However, very importantly, even with bypass, in the first week after surgery when you get home and are trying to get your head around what happened and heal, pads and incontinence are secondary concerns as the catheter does the job and you will have time to settle and plan how you want to proceed.

My choice was to carry on using the free packs at first after catheter removal to see what my body was doing before ordering anything.

I’m now day 2 after catheter removal and happy how things are progressing. I’ve been lucky and not needed pants. Actually - I did fill 5 Abena formula 2 pads and need a change of undies on the day of catheter removal, so maybe pants would have been a good idea that day! Grin

The Abena formula 2 are working great for me (got a pack of 15 in both of the freebie bags, so still have sone of those at the moment) and are available for next day delivery on Amazon when I need to stock up. I find them comfy and very absorbent. My brother (who had more invasive surgery a year ago) swears by Depend. Others I know love Tena. So some experimentation will be needed to find your product.

    Wishing you all the best!
