Hi everyone hope everyone has had a good Christmas and new year its not been a good start to our year if I’m honest been a bit of a worry not been sleeping and worrying for my partner today is the day we start all the tests for prostate cancer

Im just wandering if anyone knows how long will we have to wait for the results as its so stressful not knowing  is it quite quick as isn’t it suppose to be a two week pathway to get results from scans and a treatment plan so I’ve read online we got referred just before Christmas cheers x

  • Hello Clare

The diagnostic process is the most worrying part of this journey and all Health Authorities have different wait times.

The cancer pathway is 14 days from GP appointment to seeing a Hospital Specialist and a total of 62 days before treatment starts. If you are outside this target you can ask your hospital PALS (Patient Advisory and Liaison Service) for help.

Personal advice is to record every name, telephone number and e-mail address of anyone involved in Bryan's treatment. If you live in England download the NHS App and ask you GP for FULL access to Bryan's records - this helps you see what's going on. If he get's an appointment and there's a long wait - contact the hospital and tell them of Bryan's anxiety and you can attend any short notice cancellation (there are plenty).

For your information here's a link : The Staging, Grading and Risk Groups - Prostate Cancer.

Remember our Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week) is there for both of you to help with anxiety etc.

If I can do anything for you just let me know - no question is too trivial.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • I think waiting  times are a lottery tbh I started journey end of February 24 met with urologist March 18 he told 62 days from then until treatment which eventually started first  week of july , biopsy results alone took 8 weeks .

When I chased up urologist he asked me if I would kindly be a bit more patient

Hope you are more lucky than me

    It's the worst part ,diagnosis

  • Hi ya

My PET scan and Mri scan biopsy results took around a week all done by a phone call ,hope all goes well

    Best wishes

    Peter

  • Hi  and  , the waiting is by far the worst part and Brian (  ) has given you some help if you need to give a nudge.  Please remember that PCa is slow growing unlike other cancers and waiting a few weeks won’t actually make any difference.  I know this won’t stop you worrying but thought I should mention it.  Good luck to you both and please ask any questions you have.  David

  • You are going through the absolute worst part.

Every delay and wait seems to be forever, and you are never quite sure, even when you do get results, you may not be totally sure what they mean or imply.

It is a time of real anxiety and confusion, and I went through it between April and June 2024.

I was told these things during the journey that helped a bit:

    • That prostate cancer, even it is an aggressive on, isn't as fast moving as other cancers. Where you might be thinking in terms of days with some cancers, with this one you have weeks and even months.
    • Given that, it helps to understand that medical advisers, and yourselves, have time to get it right.
    • That, whatever the results, there is a treatment. In many cases, you can be heading for a cure. In all cases it can be managed, sometimes for many years.

I rather hung on to these things when my mind was full of "what ifs".

    I wish you well.

    Steve
