Hi all
just a quick question my dad was due to start radiotherapy
tomorrow for prostate cancer,
every day for 4 weeks . Just recieved a phone call from aintree
to say the machines broke is broke and can he start on Friday
I understand things happen, but he geared himself up for the treatment and all though it’s only a few days delayed it’s very disappointing, would anyone know if this is usual to cancel
these treatments or has he just been unlucky this time
many thanks for any replies
Lesley
Hi Lesley (Lesleymak77 ), sorry treatment is delayed but it is fairly common at the start. Broadly, once he starts any further breakdowns and he might miss a day but if a real problem with the machine, you get switched to another. It is just because he hasn’t started that the delay is a few days. There really isn’t anything to worry about with the RT (I have had 40 sessions), the hardest part is usually boredom! Feel free to ask any questions.
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
Lesley, don't worry these things happen, a couple of days won't matter in the slightest. The machines get a huge amount of use so they will go wrong now and again. I had a machine break down after I had got to the hospital on one occasion - a 90 mile round trip for nothing.......... they already had one machine down for planned maintenance. They are used to it - they offered me an appointment on the Saturday or just to add an extra day on the end. I took the Saturday and drove down instead of on the train.............plenty of parking !!!
Thank you for the reply
yes it’s just unfortunate but hopefully won’t make much difference
hope you are feeling ok after it
Hi David
thank you, it can’t be helped but he was just worked up for it
we don’t know what to expect as it’s new to us, but hopefully it will be fixed and ready to blast the evil disease on Friday
hope you are well
thanks
This is something that happens.
Do not worry about it.
The cancer is not going to get out of hand in the extra time, and, once the radiotherapy is started Dad's problems will be more about boredom than anything else.
The machines do break down from time to time. You really want them to be properly, so take the time.
We all get psyched up for the treatment and then, when the first one is done, the main thought for most people is "Was that it?"
Steve
Changed, but not diminished.
Hi Steve
thank you for replying , it’s just one of those things sadly fingers crossed it’s fixed and they can get on with it
hope you’re well
Lesley
Hello Lesley, my husband’s first appointment was cancelled at the last minute due to machine breakdown. Then on the last week of RT, on the Monday, the radiotherapy team unlocked after the weekend to find their department totally flooded due to a burst pipe the floor above. We were disappointed both times but these things happen. For the flood, they set up an extra RT clinic on the Saturday morning so we still finished that week - just a day later!
i hope you get the same care and treatment from the team that my husband receivedM we have always said that the only difference between that with the NHS and private care was that there were no carpets on the floor and no cups of coffee. The whole team were wonderfully brilliant and so very very caring. They really looked after my husband!
Hi
thank you so much for the reply it’s good to hear your husband had brilliant care
upto now they have been excellent with my dad
just hoping it’s a one off and he can carry on with each one as planned
thank you
hope you and your husband are well x
