medication advice for night time.

Hi everyone - very busy week so I haven't got round to posting John's 'story' on my profile. We are kinship carers for our grandsons (since this August) so have been immersed in all things Christmas in a  school. As a retired teacher it's been a trip down memory lane although things have changed (we had recorders at my school, not a rock band and we sang songs about little baby Jesus or Jingle Bells,, not I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day!!!!) The boys are off to visit their mother at the weekend so I aim to be more present on this forum then but just a quick question on John's behalf - is there any point in asking for some meds to help his multiple nighttime visits for a wee as he is still only taking his hormones whilst waiting for an official diagnosis. He is getting so tired and might feel better if he could sleep through a bit more (although we know the tiredness might be from the hormones and would still be there) I had a wonder drug prescribed a few years ago which enabled my bladder to keep quiet overnight and I only stopped taking it as I got a UTI and was told it might have been caused by being on this medication. Anyway, off to do the school run now and then a quick dash into town for a Christmas present for the boy's' Aunt's dog (yes, I know! But they are adamant the pooch needs a gift!) Any advice re medication for John's bladder much appreciated as we iwonder if it's not worth asking yet.
Have a good day everyone Slight smile

  • Hello

As a Community we are not able to give medical advice - we are however able to relate our own journey and how different medication has helped/hinder us from personal experience.

I have had HT for 3 years and RT during that time and although I am up in the night, I try and control this by not drinking too much in the evenings and by avoiding fizzy drinks, coffee (hard) and alcohol (even harder). It's worked well for me and to date I have avoided any medication.

There is prescription medication available but you need to see your GP regarding these as they can clash with any other medication you are on. You could always pose this question to our specialist cancer nurses - link here - Ask a Nurse

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian - thank you, Good (non medical) advice. John is drinking lots of water as I think the nurse told him to keep well hydrated so maybe he's overdoing it a bit. He doesn't fancy coffee at the moment or alcohol (I'm inclined to think he might be pregnant Slight smile) He has to have his Prostap injection at the GP's surgery just after Christmas so he can ask about medication then. For some reason I woke up in the early hours remembering that I took tolteradine despite racking my brain to remember the other day with no success.

Thank you again and sorry to have asked a medical question.

  • Hello

It's no problem, the Community Guidelines are there to protect us all (I have been on the naughty step myself!!Grin).

Strange as it may be after 3 years Hormone therapy and a TURP operation and trying everything I had a GP appointment after my reply to you and have been prescribed Tamsulosin to see if it helps my nocturia.

As an aside we have about 5 "doggy" presents under our tree as the Children return home for Christmas with their dogs - you are not alone!! Dog!!

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello Millibob (Brian)

I was glad to see that you have doggy presents ready under the tree for your visiting canine family.  One look at their happy faces as they tear off any paper & then rush around with their toy is a wonder to behold.

There are some amazing videos on U T**be of dogs homes where they lay out lots of toys & the dogs can pick the one they want which will brighten even the darkest day.

Fingers crossed that the Tamsulosin will work it's magic for you so you can sleep through & not disturb Santa when he visits next week.

    Best Wishes

    Brian

  • Hi Ally52

Wife here, New to this too.

Empathise completely, our nights were also very disturbed for weeks and it was getting us both down.

You could give your urology a call Monday and explain situation,  it's possible ( like my Dear Husband) he is not emptying bladder enough, a quick ultrasound will confirm. My DH was offered self catheterisation, not an ideal situation but totally improved his well being as his constant urge to pee  24 hours and not much happening. ( he did have inline to start  for few days because no nurse to train/explain)

We waited until a scheduled appointment to mention it, silly really we should have called urology as soon as we were on the pathway, there is no need to suffer, we need sleep.

    Best Wishes

  • That is such helpful advice so thank you! We were reflecting that this is the first time either of us have had a specific illness apart from temporary things like flu or a bad cold - usually it's a bad back type of thing where you just tolerate it, knowing it will eventually get better or you just learn to live with it.

I've passed on the info to John - although last night was fairly quiet as he only got up 6 times Slight smile
