Has anyone had a really bad reaction to either alendronic acid or enzalutamide?  Two weeks ago I took alendronic acid for the second time and enzalutamide for the first.  I'd had my one and only dose of degaralix a month before andwas waiting to start relugolix.

I took the alendronic acid and enzalutamide at around 2100.  At 0530 next morning I was being very, very sick and suffering the trots.   An ambulance was called and I spent most of the day in A&E before being discharged at around 1530.  It has taken me nearly two weeks to fully recover.

The specialist oncology ward  suspect the alendronic acid but I'd be interested in the reaction of others. The oncology doctor has taken me off all tablets except the relugolix, which I have now started, until after Christmas

The good news is that the relugolix doesn't seem to be causing any nasty side effects. I assume that it is doing what it is supposed to do and have a PSA next week when I'll find out?

  • Hi there,

I have been on enzalutamide for nearly 4 years and main side effect for me is fatigue.  Never felt sick on it.  We all react differently but I would suspect the alendronic acid.

Hope thy can sort it out soon and your PSA is nice and low when you get results next week.

    Best of  luck, Steve

  • Hello. My husband was on Enzalutamide for 18 months and his main side effects were greater fatigue and he became more unsteady on his feet. He is on a different drug to protect his bones - Xgeva and again no gut issues.

I was reading the guidelines for Alendronic acid and see that it recommends taking it 30 minutes before breakfast and to stay upright so I am wondering if taking it in the evening might have precipitated the side effects. These are the NHS guidelines.

  • Hi Ever hopeful, I have been on alendronic acid a couple of years, I take it first thing in the morning with plenty on water, about a pint, then go for a walk, 10 minutes is enough, and sit upright until a hour has passed before eating/drinking anything else, never had any problems.

  • Hi, just a little add on. alendronic acid takes about 6 months to begin working.

  • Hi  , I have just stopped taking Risedronate Sodium 35mg after 5 years.  I never had any problem but took them first thing with a pint of water and stayed upright for 30mins before eating anything.  5 years is the max time apparently to take the drug.  Coincidentally I have recently started on Enzalutamide 10weeks and have massive fatigue but no other side effects.  David
