Bicalutamide or Prosap

Hi

I am just coming into my year 3 of 3 on HT (prosap)following RT 18 months ago. I'm locally advanced into seminal vessels, no further, however my RT included the pelvic lymph modes as well as the prostate and seminal vessels.

My last 4 psa readings were,  0.04, 0.03, 0.03,0.03.

I suffered quite a lot of back earlier this year and during a none scan it was identified as osteoporosis.

During my last consultation with my oncologist, following an MDT meeting they suggested I change from Prostrap to Bicalutamide. The main reason for this is that Prostrap can increase the likelyhood of Osteoporosis or as in my case make it worse.

When we discussed the side effects she mentioned they are mainly the same however Bicalutamide is more likely to cause brest swelling. I didn't like the sound of that so agreed I would remain on Prostrap and discuss again in January 25 when we meet again.

I wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation and or experience

Thank you

  • Hi !

Just short on Bicalutamide. I don’t know if they do it in UK but you can normally have one session of radiation to the breasts and in almost all cases that prevent swelling of breasts. They can be sore with the use Bicalutamide but it’s extremely good in preventing the swelling.

    Best wishes - Ulf

  • Hello

I understand your concern - after 3 years on HT I do have a "nice pair of moobs" so here's a link for you:-

    https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/treatments-and-drugs/hormonal-therapy-for-prostate-cancer

If you read through it it will give you details of the medication you need to take to avoid this issue. You can then discuss this with your team.

(I was offered medication but declined as I take enough for other issues and to be honest they don't bother me - but that's my personal choice!).

    Best wishes - Brian.
