CT scan mapping my prostate for radiotherapy

I am very worried and wonder if anyone had had this experience? The radiologists at the NNUH had had two aborted attemps to map my prostate for radiotherapy. First time my bladder was not very full and despite the enema my colon was too full. Despite fitting the cannula badly and doing all the prep the mapping was aborted. I went back the next day. Cannula fitted painlessly, bladder full,. colon OK but again the mapping was aborted – gas in the colon!! I am attending for a third attempt later this week. What happens if it fails again? is the radiotherapy not suitable for me? Has anyone had similar failed mapping attempts?

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the online Prostate Community

You are not alone in having issues with the CT planning scan - I know someone who took 3 attempts to get it right so with luck you will be fine the 3rd attempt. I am sure they will keep going until they get it right,

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi  ,  I had 3 abortive planning attempts and eventually realised that I needed to try and have my bowels empty and avoid gas producers!  After that, I sailed through 37 RT sessions without getting bounced once.  I tried to get a routine that worked for me and although incredibly boring it worked.  Good luck with the tattoos and your eventual treatment.  There isn’t a panic once you are on HT, so don’t worry. Best wishes, David

  • Hello Tango, it is very reassuring to hear what you have to say. I am down for my third attempt on Thursday 13th (good job I am not superstitious!) If I ever get there, I start 20 sessions of RT on 4 July. After I have voted.

  • So you star a week or so after i start are you norwich based buddy

  • Dereham. Stage 3 prostate cancer. Two sites, one well contained within the prostate and one on the membrane, but not metastasised as yet. Done the hormone pills and two injections with a third scheduled after the RT. Not what I had planned for my "golden years"

  • Mines in my bio in prostate and lymph node i got changed 3 times with consultants that really stressed me out though

  • Hello MountPeter,

It was only on my 3rd attempt that I managed to complete the planning scan, the issue having been that my bladder wasn't full enough.  If I had failed again I was going to ask the radiologists how long they would let me keep trying so never did find out the answer to that question,

Good luck with the next try later this week & I'm sure they will help support you until success.

    All the best,

    Brian
