Hi folks.                                                                                          I got my phone call today after the team meeting and they’ve sent out an appointment for the Oncologist to discuss my treatment options, the nurse said it would be further observation or Radiotherapy and HT,apparently I’m 3+4 so just wanting started as the waiting does my head in

  • Hello   That's the problem with the diagnosis - the waiting - once you get on your treatment path then things will appear to settle down. By further observation I think they mean "Active Surveillance" details of this are in the link below.

If you are going to start HT/RT ask them how long for and the time scale for your wait for RT. if you want to know anything else, just ask.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi, need a bit more information, what was your PSA and from your biopsy how many cores had cancer? And is it contained within the prostate?

I am also 3+4 and been on surveillence for 2 years with regular PSA checks and annual MRI

  • I forgot to say that they’re probably ruling out surgery as I’ve got RA

  • I think it was 4.8 the psa had 5 cores done and they all showed cancerous and it’s contained in my prostate

  • Hello Robert, waiting for appointments, results etc is the hardest part of this journey and you have certainly got quite a long way now. Just hang on in there and the next part of your 'journey' will soon become clearer for you :) How is your wife dealing with the news? I was a wreck when my husband was diagnosed!

  • Hi.                                                                          She’s actually been very good and she’s made off strong stuff as works in a care home on the bank plus is the main carer for my Mum who’s got Alzheimer’s plus looks after me as I had to retire at 50 with RA,we we’re both in tears when we got the news but as I said we just have to deal with it

  • Hello   Cancer is a family "thing". My wife and children (all adults) have been with me all the way from diagnosis to now - 2 years of ups and downs - we have laughed, cried, had very "dark days" - but at the end of the day we have got there - well almost - I have another year on Hormone Therapy and lifelong PSA's  and it's been a journey.

In 2 years, I have "lost friends" (they don't do cancer!!), made many more friends - plenty on here, done 5k runs, become more health aware - enjoyed life more and you know what - it's made me a more aware of other people and overall my wife says I am a much "better" person.

A positive attitude and the will to get the better of the cancer is half the battle - at the start of the journey - it looks a hard slog - but with the support of your family and us (The Online Community) - you will get there!

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Robert, My husband is at a similar stage we had a telephone consultation today and was expecting to hear  what route he would be taking, He’s already on hormonal treatment and it will be either chemo or radiotherapy. The team meeting had taken place and a referral now to Oncology which could be up to 2 weeks we’ve been waiting since before Christmas it’s so frustrating and just seem to be getting told the same thing and nothing further is happening! The waiting is hell ! I hope you get started soon.  Take care.

  • Hello   I have just read your husbands profile and can understand your frustration at the wait. I would suggest tomorrow:

    * You ring the hospital, find the oncology department and tell whoever is on your team you are happy to take any short notice appointment in the event someone cancels theirs.

    * Contact the hospital PALS (Patient Advice & Liaison Service) and tell them of your wait. Tell them it's cancer and is causing anxiety and can they get your appointment and treatment plan brought forward.

Sometimes it pays to be a little pro-active - it worked for me.

    Best wishes - Brian.
