Hi - new here and just after some advice.

Dad had 2 PSA blood, 10.4 & 13. Just had an MRI that shows enlarged prostate and a dark patch on right side of prostate. The lady that called said it’s a 4 on the suspicion scale (don’t know what that is!) She said it’s 50/50 as to whether it’s something like cancer.

Does anyone have a similar story? Is a patch a good sign even if it was to be cancerous?

Thanks in advance for your time

  • Hi A and welcome

Suspicion scale is probably PI RADS 4 which means likely but not Def to be PC.

So 50/50 about right, could be an infection.

Did the lady on the phone say what was next, a biopsy possibly?

What was the timing between the two PSA tests?

    Regards

    Steve

  • Thanks for answering me Steve. As you can imagine my Dad is in a right state.

Think the tests were 2/3 weeks apart. Biopsy is booked for 11/12. Been told it’ll take two weeks after that for results. Makes it 23rd! Not the best timing for him.

  • Yes, not good timing although in a way sometimes it's better to know and you'll know  in 3 weeks.

One plus point, if it is cancer looks like contained within the gland  so easier to treat.

I hope that things work out ok, fingers crossed it's not cancer.

Let us know when u have more detail.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks Steve and thanks for replying. Good to have someone to talk too at times like this

If u think of any other questions u can always post back

  • Hello there. No time is good for this and at this time of year it’s particularly hard. Hopefully, whatever the outcome on 23rd with the results you should have either a plan going forward and / or options to consider. This group is amazing and supportive and even when you are in despair at stupid o clock there’s always someone who can offer you some support or a virtual hug.
take care & Best Wishes xx

  • Hello  Welcome to the online Community

As the other posters have said, it's more than likely to be Prostate Cancer - BUT a low(ish) PSA and early detection, your dad should be fine. It's a stressful time waiting for a diagnosis and results but you are in the right place for help and advice.

Feel free to ask anything - however trivial you think it is you will get answers from people who have "walked the walk".

I hope everything goes well for you both - my best wishes - Brian.

  • In all the things I’ve endured, the biopsy is the most invasive. It’s not painful, just uncomfortable. There were 2 people and a nurse involved, one guy administered local anaesthetic, the other was my specialist who did the actual biopsy. There were 20 hollow needle insertions on mine(we’re all different, his maybe less or more), I felt each one, it was a spring catch and I felt each time he pull the trigger to take the sample. As I said, uncomfortable. I was however, glad it was over. As I relaxed I said I’m glad that’s over, he replied, yes, just the other side to do now!!!

After it was finished I asked him to be straight, what did he see. (They use a camera probe for positioning), he said he’s 99% sure I have cancer, I’d had it a long time as it was quite large and had escaped outside into a few other bits but he can’t say 100% until tests come back but they both nodded in agreement. He then put me on hormone treatment tablets to start the process until I had my result’s appointment to prove it.
So just ask them at the biopsy what they saw, if they are reluctant to say, it was worth a try. If they give him hormones, it’s going to be cancer but that’s the start of the journey, so it’s good news to start treatment.
I worked on the basis it was not cancer until they told me, then when confirmed I I just got on and did everything asked of me, my team are great. I’m 3b, possibly 4. I don’t want to be 4, the jury is still out. And I’m going to be fine, I just know it. But it’s a different fine than I was before!

And by the way I had a psa of 8.

  • Good morning Amme84 and a warm welcome from one who is usually awake at stupid o'clock, but then I do live in a different time zone (sounds a bit Dr Who ish).

No time is good to be going through tests to try and find out if you have cancer but your dad will be in good hands literally. Keep a close eye on him after the procedure for any infection and make sure that he tells someone if he feels at all unwell as he would then need to seek urgent medical help. There are two ways of taking the biopsy but the one through the back passage is classified as a 'dirty procedure' where there is a greater risk of infection, however, this is easily dealt with by antibiotics if it happens.

Also two heads are better than one so make sure that dad has someone with him at the biopsy.

Please come back with any questions or just for a chat or letting off steam. All the best to your dad for the biopsy and I hope that he has good news with the results.

  • Hello and welcome. The waiting is the worst bit, your mind tends to go into overdrive and thinking the worst. I spent hours and hours on the internet trying to find the answer I wanted rather than the medical answers I was finding but didn't want to believe. The good thing is your dad is in the system now. You could let them know that you can take a late cancellation if an appointment becomes available. We are all here for you.
