Surgery or Radiotherapy? Decision made!

Decision made.  I’m pT3a, N0 M0 (see my profile for details ).  My extensive research points to a combo treatment of HT / RT / Brachy (NHS and NICE approved).  MDT met again a couple of days ago and their recommendation (without my input) was the same.  I had a consultation at Addenbrookes yesterday with a top prostatectomy surgeon and he agreed with me that my decision was the best one, as surgery would carry at least a 30% chance of recurrence.  So I collected my prescription on way out!   I took my first bicalutamide tablet taken this morning…..so the treatment is underway. Just over 62 days (NHS target) since GP referral so well done to them after a thorough diagnosis.  I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders with regards to timelines (chasing the NHS, politely!), but I’m under no illusion that the next few months of treatment will present challenges.  My wife and I are a strong team and we intend to take everything in our stride and, hopefully, this curative pathway will prevail.  Here we go…..wish us luck!

  • You have my 100% sympathy there - we as a family are on the Office For National Statistics Covid Survey and since April 2020 we have been testing and reporting our tests and general health every 3 weeks. Christmas Eve 2020 I tested positive, no symptoms - No Christmas!!  Christmas Eve 2021 Admitted to Hospital with Stage 3 kidney disease and later Prostate Cancer - No Christmas!! Christmas Eve 2022 took the dog for a long walk and over estimated my walking ability - almost no Christmas!! Christmas 2023 - it looks like one of our 2 dogs won't make it - however we are all trying to be positive!!

As I always remind myself - we are on a "Curative Pathway"

Best wishes to you and the family - Brian.

  • Oh no!  I’m so sorry to read this! Just what you don’t need. Have you been told you are entitled to antivirals? My husband was told this after he had his radiotherapy as this makes people more vulnerable. That said, he was symptom free within a couple of days or so and testing negative -,only to succumb to ‘Covid rebound’ a few days later and testing positive again. Apparently this rebound is more common in people who take the antivirals. I hope you feel better soon and that your wife doesn’t get it .

and…. I missed the photo of your granddaughter ! Have you read Sidsmum’scpostvin the ‘no specific topic’ which shows a letter written by her daughters’ s pupil and my post about how children see their grandparents? Good for a laugh!!!!

  • Oh, Brian, sorry to hear about your dog. I hope he does ‘make it’. You deserve to have a good Christmas after the last 3. We take these animals into our home but they steal our hearts as they become members of the family. When they leave us there is a massive hole in the family.

  • Ah - I wasn't going to say anything but it slipped out - he's an 8 year old rescue racing greyhound, we've had for 4 years - sadly he's joined the "Big C" club - it's bone cancer so I don't think he will be with us later today -Cry. but thanks for your support as ever.

  • Oh dear. You are the second person this week telling me a similar story. As your taking HT you are allowed to wear your heart on your sleeve :) It’s tough for you and your family. <hugs> ,

  • If you’ve been on the survey that long, you must have a LOT of Amazon gift vouchers Joy

  • Hey - You are back!!  Not my doing may I add!!

  • Oh bother - I didn't know you knew we got paid for it!!  There are 3 of us on the survey and that was £75.00 every 3/4 weeks. We had Tesco (other stores are available) vouchers so it paid for our food!!

They stopped paying early in 2023 and we now don't get paid - but we are still doing the surveys so that when questions are asked in the House of Commons - Rishi has an answer!!

  • Hi Brian,

Sorry to hear about your dog. Ours was an ex-racer who had won over 10,000 Euros during his career but was discarded by his owners when he stopped winning. We adopted him at six years old and had four years of his company before he also got bone cancer during the first lockdown in 2020. Greyhounds are such amazing dogs so laid back and lazy but incredibly fast when they choose to be.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.
