Surgery or Radiotherapy? Decision made!

Decision made.  I’m pT3a, N0 M0 (see my profile for details ).  My extensive research points to a combo treatment of HT / RT / Brachy (NHS and NICE approved).  MDT met again a couple of days ago and their recommendation (without my input) was the same.  I had a consultation at Addenbrookes yesterday with a top prostatectomy surgeon and he agreed with me that my decision was the best one, as surgery would carry at least a 30% chance of recurrence.  So I collected my prescription on way out!   I took my first bicalutamide tablet taken this morning…..so the treatment is underway. Just over 62 days (NHS target) since GP referral so well done to them after a thorough diagnosis.  I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders with regards to timelines (chasing the NHS, politely!), but I’m under no illusion that the next few months of treatment will present challenges.  My wife and I are a strong team and we intend to take everything in our stride and, hopefully, this curative pathway will prevail.  Here we go…..wish us luck!

  • Great news it’s going well,long May it continue,enjoy your weekend,rest up

  • Hi Millibob - driving is just over 30 mins each way on the A1 (after rush hour, as my sunbed appointment is 10:00 every day), so no real problem.  Also, the parking - for those undergoing cancer treatment at Peterborough hospital is free and plenty of space.  Ready for a rest though, but I will guarantee I’ll be raring to go on Monday morning!!  AW

  • Happy days - I shall be on the A1 a week on Saturday when Oldham play Ebbesfleet away! it's a cracking road now they have removed all the roundabouts,

Yes, Christies in Oldham have a gated free car park for anyone undergoing Radiotherapy and it's free.

Enjoy the weekend. I think once you have completed all your fractions and the travelling stops - you don't meet people for a chat in the waiting room - you will find it's like a wilderness - almost abandoned by the NHS.

  • Glad to hear that everything is going well & that you are now in a routine.  I would have loved the same appointment time every day (preferably early morning), but mine varied from 08:20 to 16:00 with a great mixture in between those times.  There was no allocated car park & although parking was free (they gave me a different QR code slip each day to scan on exit) it was like a lottery each day finding a space.  It felt amazing each time I won lol.

  • I think your research will serve you well.

I think you probably made the best choice and your treatment plan has also gone very well.

  • Good decision I had the same choice 6  months ago now brachytherapy and RT are all behind me and I am moving on , there’s absolutely nothing to worry about with this treatment honestly all my fears where wasted , good luck on the conveyer belt of treatment lay back and take it

  • Hello   Great to see you around and I am so pleased all is well - Keep well and keep in touch.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks for the reassurance Mustardo- a couple of questions if that’s Ok:

Are you still on HT and if so, how long for? The consultant says I only need one year (which I agree with- as that’s the same as the ASCENDE-RT trial.

    what is your latest PSA?
    cheers, AW
