Booze and Prostate Cancer.

Though the public house has long been central to socialisation and the for centuries brought solace to the working man as he grappled with the trials and tribulations of quotidian existence, it has never received the sort of scholarly attention it deserves.

I have attempted to rectify this with decades of research, carried out in person travelling from John O Groats to Lands End. I have sampled the delights of many a hostelry often experimenting and supporting the local economy by tasting local brews.

As the years have progressed, I have turned what began in my boarding school as a mild flirtation into a hobby, progressing in later life into what can only be described as a vocation, almost a religion.

In the vocational fervour of the true scholar I have tirelessly devoted my life to painstaking research, in doing so I have ignored the weather and the seasons , travelling the length and breadth of the country, sampling the local ales and acclimatising my taste buds to a variety of light ales in summer and rich dark ales to fortify myself against the harsh winters of these shores.

I have purely in the interests of science even sampled foreign ales and fine imported wines, often at great expense.

Alas, not only has the prostate cancer rudely interrupted my other hobby but it has somewhat curtailed my drinking. Now, you may wonder where all this is leading so let me cut to the chase. Is anyone boozing whilst on Zoladex. I have read about osteoporosis and the good lord knows I am suffering enough side effects but is a man expected to forfeit all of life's pleasures?

Well as you know I am a "man of moderation" but I still pay my CAMRA membership each year, and when following my local football team to strange away grounds in mystical parts of the UK (where the heck is Bromley??) I do tend to visit the local licenced house for a refreshing pint of real ale (Spitfire and Fullers being a preference down south).

Up in the frozen north west of England we have a local brewer - one J W Lees and for 50 years he has been trying to bankrupt me with his best bitter - and to be honest he still does twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday (and other special occasions) - but in my eyes its a fine natural product with no additives - therefore it must be good good me.

Ah reality strikes - yes before RT - when I was "dry" for over a month - I had one of my GP visits and when asked "Am I ok to have alcohol with my HT" the answer was "In moderation"" - so there you are a man of moderation - I calculate I have about 22/24 units of alcohol per week.

The up side - I enjoy it, I feel good for it - I socialise and my mental health is good.

The down side - It eats away at my state pension and helps me (along with the manopause) to put on weight.

Honest answer from me - others will know better! End of sermon

Have one for me - cheers

    Brian.

I am living proof that wisdom doesn't come with age. Your response as ever an excellent one. To be fair I have been imbibing twice a week, on the first occasion half a bottle of red and on the second occasion a bottle. By my previous standards this is not a lot at all and I hope it is within safe limits.

However, I am soon planning a holiday and will no doubt drink more than this. I think I had better clarify what would be deemed to be the boundary of moderation.
