Hi All - we were gearing up for chemo no. 6 this Friday but bloods have shown liver and kidney issues so treatment delayed for one week. Does anyone else have experience of this and can advice what we can do to support liver and kidney for a week to get to the end of treatment?

  • Hi

I have no experience of chemo, but my husbands bloods bounced about after Rt and Ht combo and his liver and kidney were sometimes effected. He would go on a very strict diet of just eating really well but also drinking a lot of water, there are supplements but you would need to run them by someone incase they interfere. So a good week of just eating fruit veg and nuts, oily fish (small amount of lean red meat if you have to) organic/ free range chicken. Grains/pulses/ beans, no processed food at all!!! No salt, sugar. Get vitamin C (the great healer) from some nice big oranges, leafy greens the darker the better, broccoli is always a good one. No alcohol at all - lots of water to flush you through and hydrate you. Odd glass of freshly squeezed juice. Your/his body will love you for it .
    good luck with the Chemo.

*I've just read your profile and see you have an allotment , I couldn’t be more jealous if I tried! Though I would just like to put the seeds and plants in, not the hard work bit. X

  • Thanks  that’s really helpful. Definitely he needs to have been drinking more water I think and will make sure he gets good food this week. Thanks for the tip re vit c. He’s the one does all the heavy work at the allotment and I do the planting! It is a welcome peaceful place for us.

  • Hi

Lorraine has given you some good advice about diet and this tallied with the advice from hubbies nephrologist with the added information to limit dairy products. I would just like to add that we were told the most work was done in the first few sessions of chemotherapy and not to stress if the full six sessions were not completed. All the best with the chemo and then getting back to your new normal.

  • Hi  just to agree with the others, 5 sessions will have done the job.  The sixth session just gold plates.  I only managed 4 out of my 6 but was pleased to stop.  If his bloods settle, then have the treatment but otherwise don’t fret over it.  He has done very well to get 5 sessions.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Thankyou both for your comments really encouraging to know the 5 sessions may well be enough. We had to ask for the 6th and I had a gut feeling something would go awry. About to make a detox smoothie to get him back on track. He’s at 1.2 from 80 re. PSA so pretty good. Blush

  • Wow! Great PSA , sounding very positive.
