Gold Markers Before Radiotherapy

Just looking for anyone with experience of gold markers to improve the accuracy of radiotherapy. My NHS pathway is at anNHS hospital and after my first oncology appointment today, they are not able to offer this technique, and weren't able to tell me of anywhere locally. I have had a private consultation with a consultant at The Royal Marsden who recommended gold seeding and seemed to think this was common practice now. I'm not sure about the practicalities of having 20 RT treatments away from home so I'd be grateful to learn from anyone who has had gold seeding, and where they had it.

  • I got gold seeds before my RT back in 2019. It was done 2 weeks before the planning scan and was a very short procedure but I had some blood in my urine for a few days after. I was treated at the Beatson in Glasgow.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.

  • Thanks Seamus, I had picked up on your gold seeds from previous discussions. Glasgow a long way from Northamptonshire. From your profile, you stayed in a hotel during the week. I'm considering this but not too good if the RT causes problems that require diet control. I'll see if anyone comes back closer to home. It doesn't look as though gold seeding is common practice. Was the procedure painful as it is transrectal?

  • Yes I remember having them stuffed in by a couple of  nurses.

Probably slightly worse than biopsy but I think only 3 markers so not so many prods.

I lived just a few miles away from Mount Vernon hospital which did make it easier. Good luck

  • A bit uncomfortable and less painful than the biopsy. It was all over and done with in about five minutes. I was given a copy of the ultrasound pictures which I still have as a memento!

  • Had mine inserted af my area base hospital, Addenbrookes in Cambridge. It was a 5 minute job, the last of the invasive procedures, I found it more uncomfortable than the biopsy but luckily, far shorter!
I had an hours drive each way daily for RT, just needed a wee on the way home towards the end. Locate all toilets on your route and it’s all good. Luckily mine was rural so I found a tree!!

  • Thanks. Addenbrookes may be an option for me as I'm about an our away also.

  • I was once on my way back from Addenbrooks after have a scan involving isotopes. Heart not prostate. Travelling down the M6 in transport with 2 old ladies, we came to a stop with my bladder already distended from my kidneys desperately trying to flush my system. A mile from the exit and traffic stops 20 minutes go by and I am fit to burst. The driver didn't want me to get out in case things moved or I got arrested for indecent exposure. Another 20 minutes before finally got going and 5 minutes to find somewhere to stop. I broke all records for time and distance and destroyed a whole swathe of weeds.

  • I had seeds before RT. Interesting little things. This was done locally in my local hospital. A nurse and doctor used probe and visual display to place them accurately. Not really much trouble. Slightly uncomfortable but over quickly.
Supposed to improve accuracy of RT which was delivered later in regional hospital. 20 fractions.

My RT involved bus travel not always reliable and a bit of a problem when drinking so much water! There was a toilet on the bus but not always open! It was an X7 bus service supposed to link hospitals too.

    This was in Dundee Ninewells.
