Hello, I've joined this forum as looking for support my Dad who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He has been on hormone therapy for 7 months and about to start radiotherapy soon.

He is really struggling with chronic fatigue, he also has COPD too. He spends most of his says asleep on the sofa or in bed and has no energy to do anything. I've urged him to try antidepressants to see if they will help with his energy levels and tiredness. The Doctor has prescribed him 20mg of Citalopram... has anyone else tried medications to help with chronic fatigue.  I don't think the 20mg will be enough.

Thanks

  • Hi Lau, welcome to the forum.  There are plenty of good folk here who can offer you good first-hand advice.  Myself it was the month of Radiotherapy that done me in with the Fatigue.  I tried not to let it beat me.  I was being overtaken by Tortoises on my way to work.

Hope your Dad starts feeling better soon.

  • Hi Lau

    And welcome.

The RT was almost the worst thing about PC - the worst being the biopsy. I was on HT for 2 years, and any sort of physical exertion was difficult. That said, it's good to try and do something and makes it easier once the HT stops. So , try and encourage him ( as it looks like you are) to get out and walk, cycle, run or swim - anything will help.

    Regards

    Trying to get fit again!
  • Possibly low dose Dexamethasone might be worth looking into to boost appetite and energy levels?

  • Thanks Stuart. My Dad is possibly one of the most stubborn men I know..there is no telling him. Don't think it helps because of his COPD. He gets breathless going up the stairs and even washing the dishes. I'm hoping once the HT finishes he may feel better but got another 18 months of that to go :( Doctor has prescribed him the anti depressant Citalopram...not sure if that will help though but will see.
