i am new here so its a bit daunt·ing but i was recently found to have cancer cells in the prostate psa has been going up and down from 8.3 to 6.3 and the only two options i have facing me currently are getting the prostate removed or hormnone treatment and radiotherapy and its fifficult to make a desision on what to do both desisions scare me so i am a 55 year old male recently diagnosed
Hi it’s a difficult decision to make I went for the surgery as they said that the cancer had not spread outside the prostate. Also due to my age 74 they said that surgery was my best option.
my first PSA result after surgery (3weeks ago) was 0.2 which is a bit higher than expected. When they done the biopsy on my prostate in the lab a small lump was found on the surface of the prostate. Consequently my grade has went from 3 to 4 and there is the possibility of cancer cells have escaped from the prostate.
I have been incontinent since surgery which is debilitating. However I have heard quite a few guys who went for the hormone and radiotherapy have similar issues and also bowel problems.
phone prostate cancer uk and speak to one of the specialist nurses they are very helpful
gleeson score is a 4 witht the psa at 7.3 so far this is localised tot he prostate and isnt in any other part od the body scans showed nothing at all no lumps they did a biopsy and thats how thay found the cancer cells so now i am trying to make a decision weather to do radiotherapy or surgery and after learning everything that i have over the past few weks ie stories informatiuon joining a group and a few phone calls the decision isnt any easyer
so it looks like a low key affair which is good, u could ask about active surveillance .
As far as treatment goes, surgery can produce issues with ED and urinary problems but sometimes these can get better over time. obviously not everyone has issues.
RT is a bit easier , no major surgery and potentially no long lasting side effects. do much online research before deciding, time is on your side.
one downside to RT , if cancer returns surgery very tricky. if cancer returns after surgery RT still possible
good luck
Steve
Make sure you really get all the details from the biopsy. How many samples, how many with cancer, what volume of cancer you can then start to think about your options. I am 58 and was diagnosed a year ago, they start with talking about removal etc but whenI got the biopsy results it was very low volume so I am on active surveillance. Also you can consider HIFU if the cancer is restricted to the prostate, you can research this on here or in google. Another option is brachytherapy, lots of options and as it is very slow growing take the time to really understand the options, see what the MTD are saying and then you can make an informed decision, good luck!
