Worried about future

My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in summer 2016 he was advised to have hormone therapy followed by radiotherapy because he had abdominal surgery and they were concerned about scar tissue. So operation was not advisable. His Gleason score was 7 but consultant said it was aggressive. He handled all the treatment brilliantly and remained on HT for about 2 years. Then in 2021 his psa had risen to 8 so he was offered cryotherapy but following that it has risen again first to 12 then 17 in September. They did bone scans and ct scans but said they couldn’t find it maybe too small? Then out back on HT and his psa back to 6. They said they were going to repeat scans etc now in January but following a phone call today they want him to have one more injection and then review in June. If feels like we are in limbo as I don’t know what is going on inside him. Anyone experienced anything like it? He looks really healthy but I’m scared for him

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your husband and sorry too that nobody relied earlier. I normally don't look at this forum because mostly I hang out in Family and friends forum and Carers only forum since it is my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma and that is another story altogether.

I do however have a benign enlarged prostrate myself so have some familiarity - especially the wonders of a "digital rectal examination" and have annual checkup with my GP since the tablets I take may help to mask me getting prostrate cancer.

I have certainly experienced friends saying how well my wife looks - well she still has cancer but fortunately for us it is stable and we got to "living with" rather than dying from cancer.

If we look at Your feelings when someone has cancer we can see Anxiety and uncertainty are really common. Does any of us really know what is going on inside ourselves let alone someone we love?

Sometimes we talk on here about "pre-grief" - often the idea of grieving for the life we expected rather that the one we actually got .

    <<hugs>>

  • Hello Lucy, if he was offered cryotherapy, that suggests they thought the recurrence was in the prostate. How did they know this? It's relatively rare to get recurrence in the target area of previous radiotherapy treatment given with curative intent, but not impossible. I'm wondering if he had a PSMA PET scan at that time?

I would push for a PSMA PET scan now - it has a good chance of finding where the cancer is at a PSA of 6, and it might be treatable if it's just in one or two places, and I wouldn't want to overlook that possibility. There are a small percentage of prostate cancers which don't ever show up on PSMA scans, because their particular cell mutations don't generate the PSMA molecule the scan looks for (this is why I'm wondering if he had such a scan before, and if it worked).

  • Thank you for replying. He had a pet scan and a bone scan but they didn’t find anything said it might just be too small at the moment. Said they’d repeat everything in January but they haven’t as put him back on hormone therapy and when they tested him in January the psa level had dropped right down. So now they say repeat in 3 more months! Very frustrating all this waiting to see what happens next

  • Hi Lucy

What is the PSA now, u say it's dropped down?
