Hi

I’ve found out today that my dad may have prostate cancer. I say May as his consultant rang Friday but one mention of the word cancer and he switched off so I’m not really sure what has/hasn’t been said (and neither is he, nor is he particularly inclined to ask).

He’s had an MRI, blood test, and flow study (?) so far. He’s now been referred to a biopsy (no confirmed date) and a bone scan (next week). No idea of what they’ve actually found in any of these other than the flow one seemed to be all fine from what they said.

what is the likelihood they think this is cancer? The bone scan is the one concerning me the most as from online sites it seems this referral is usual after diagnosis. Symptom wise he has lots of prostate cancer symptoms (started this summer) and has had what we thought was sciatica and knee pain for the last month or two.

Any guidance on what further tests we can expect/what specifically I can ask him to confirm with his consultant would be appreciated.

  • Hi

Aside from the biopsy and bone scan, he has had most of the tests I had. I did have a CT scan but I  cant recall why. I also had a DRE ( digital rectal examination) which you dont mention. The bone scan is ( in my experience) only conducted if they want to check if the cancer has spread to the bones.

Without any data, its difficult to know for sure if he has PC and, if so, how serious. But my feeling is that he must, or they wouldn't be going to all this trouble.

He needs to ask the consultant if he has PC and, if so, his PSA ( from the blood test). I don't think the tumour staging ( TNM) will be known until after the biopsy.  At Poole hospital, there are Cancer Nurse Specialists, who work for the consultants, and they might be easier to approach.

It sounds like early days, so if you can feed us information as you become aware of it, then we can help more.

Anything to do with PC seems to take forever, so don't get stressed over how long things take.

    Trying to get fit again!
  • Hi.

As Scampidoodle has already mentioned some stats would be good in order to give advice.

Need a PSA figure and details of what the MRI says, I realise biopsy still to come.

They have obviously seen something on the MRI hence further tests but without some detail it's impossible to speculate.

    Regards
