low vitamin D - anyone diagnosed with this

Hello

new to the group. I am nearly 66. I was diagnosed with low to medium risk prostate cancer in Dec 2021. I was told it was small, early, and only in one part of the prostate. My PSA has always been 'within the norm' for my age. It went up for c6 months after the initial biopsy but was still within the normal range. I opted for active surveillance. Annual MRI due end of Nov this year.

I was diagnosed with gout before the cancer. Meds controlled this. For the last 3 months+ I've had multiple joint pain. This included hip pain. I was worried the cancer had spread. X rays showed I have arthritis in my hips. But pain continues in joints of hands, knees and feet. Xrays found no arthritis in my hands. Tests showed it's not gout.

GP did blood tests this week. Had a text saying my Vit D is low and I'll have supplements. I've none of the usual risk factors for low vit D. I'm now worried as I've read low Vit D IS linked to more aggressive prostate cancer. Does anyone have any experience of this - especially getting low Vit D after diagnosis.

Regards

Mick

  • Hi Mick,

I was diagnosed in May 2021, Intermediate Risk, Gleason 3+4(7).  I opted for Hormones and Radiotherapy.  Now I am in Remission.  It was hard but worth it.

About 6 months ago I was diagnosed with low Vitamin D, got put in tablets, had my bloods done a couple of times, nothing else has been said.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the Prostate Cancer.  Interesting though, it could say why I have the Vit D deficiency.

Has anyone else had this?  It would be interesting to know.

Hope things go ok for you.

  • It would be worth looking at your ALP results. If they are within the normal range along with your calcium levels there is probably nothing to worry about. ALP is a tumour marker for cancer in the bones although it could happen for other reasons.

  • Hi

If you ask your doctor, there’s a tablet you can take to boost your vitamin D, it’s called Alca D I take it all the time, helps strengthen the bones.

    stay safe

  • I've had no problem with vitamin D, but have taken cod liver oil capsules for ages for arthritis. However I have been low on B12 and B12 Folate which does cause stiffness and pain in the toes and fingers as well as fatigue.  Have you had bloods done for B12? Vitamin D supplements are easy to come by from places like Holland and Barret or Zip Vit mail order (much cheaper) I recommend the zip vit  Cod liver oil with Vitamin D and A .  You should also consider what other meds you're on, I know that my problem was don to Lansaprazole which has a side effect of reducing the absorption of B12. If you want a professional opinion, use the Ask and Expert button at the top of this page. Hope you soon get it sorted.

  • Hi Mick

I understand that the Hormone Treatment can cause the low Vitamin D and that it's a good idea to top up your Vitamin D with tablets.

    Kind Regards - Brian.
