Hello

Chemo is my next stage and have appt on 4th Oct to discuss. As it comes closer I'm getting a bit stressed about hair loss. I'm 51 and have a decent enough head of hair. People who have experienced chemo, did the hair fall out and if it did how did you deal with it? I believe there's a thing called the cold cap but unsure of its effectiveness . Also how often do you get a cycle. I read online it's every 3 weeks but I'm under the impression it is weekly. Anyway just some stress going on hope some folk can answer some of my questions.

Cheers

  • Hi, I had six cycles of chemo every three weeks that started in April and finished in July. See my profile for more info. I thought that to start with my hair might be ok although I did have it cut quite short (I have quite a thick head of hair). Rather suddenly just before my second cycle of chemo my hair started to thin very quickly. I shaved my head and kept it shaved through until the end of the chemo. It took some weeks to get used to it but by the end it felt quite normal. Within 4 weeks of the end of the chemo the hair was growing back and now, 8 weeks later it is as thick as it was before but a bit wavy rather than straight. Good luck Andrey

  • Hi

The chemotherapy is ever three weeks, the first few sessions are the worst, then the body gets more used to it. Losing hair is one of a number of things that will happen with chemotherapy, mega hot flushes, loss of taste, brown nails muscle pain. Tiredness, fatigue. But we’re all different so hopefully some of these will pass you by.
Your head hair will come back, some times better than before, I tell everyone this when their starting chemo, make sure you take your temperature morning and night, believe me this is one of the most important things while on chemotherapy.

    Stay safe

  • completely agree with Joe. Very important to keep track of temperature and any side effects as you go through treatment.

  • Oh man the side effects sound rough, I can't wait for it!
