PSA Levels

My husband has the symptoms of prostate cancer and had his PSA levels checked yesterday.  They came back today at 3.02.  He is 55 years old.  He hasn't spoken to his doctor yet but his NHS app is saying these levels are normal and no further action is needed.  After doing a bit of research I believe these levels are fairly high for his age.  Can anyone advise us on this?  Is there something else we can ask his GP to do?  Thanks

  • Hi. He could ask if his doc can do a DRE. Finger up the bottom to feel if his prostate is too hard or too big. It could put your minds at rest.

  • Hi You say he has the symptoms of PC, what exactly are the symptoms,

3.02 is normal or near normal. You would need to take another test in 3 months to see if it's moving upwards.

As honey has said u could ask the Dr for a Dre but that doesn't always show anything.

I wouldn't worry too much at this stage but keep on top of PSA tests , if it does start moving upwards then u could ask for a MRI scan.

    Regards

  • Trouble is my husbands doctor wouldn’t do another PSA test in 3 months at that low level. My husbands PSA has been a bit of a red herring and was never high but it had increased to 5 during covid and that was the reactor for them. He had a DRE which showed a hard prostate and we were devastated to find he was an aggressive Gleason 9. If you feel something isn’t right then push for further investigation even if he is only put on active surveillance.

  • sorry to hear about the Gleeson 9, suppose in your OH's  case Covid didn't help because of delays. hope he had the treatment he needed in the end

  • Thanks Grundy. Yeh covid delays have been so damaging in my husbands case. Even then the urology nurse said “well he’s not even in double figures” before he was referred. He starts radiotherapy on the 5th October. Praying it’s not already spread microscopically means it’s aggressive and we are fearful.

  • Sorry meant Grundo.

  • Hi honey2. If its any help I was diagnosed in 2019 with gleason 9 locally advanced aggressive prostate cancer with 4 surrounding lymph nodes affected too. I was put on hormones for 6 months then had 37 days of intensive radiotherapy. My psa initially was 8.8 and has reduced to 0.01. After the RT I have been on zoladex hormone 3 mthly injections for 3 years, 12 in all. I have 2 more left up to next March. I am telephone reviewed every 6 mths having to give a blood test a week before each review. Psa holding at 0.01 still. I have been told after my 36 mths of zoladex I can have a rest from them and psa will be monitored regularly. I have been Very lucky to have no side effects from any of my treatment so I'm optimistic. There are people on here that are still successfully containing their cancer and with expected many years ahead of them. Gleason 9 is not really what you want to hear but with today's treatments it's not all doom and gloom although admittedly worrying. I hope your husband has as much success as I have so far and I hope this helps you both.

  • I think in this situation MRI tells everything, when did he have one done and what did it say because MRI would indicate if contained

  • Hi

Your husband's PSA is at the normal limit for the UK, which is 3.0..  However in other countries the normal limit is higher. For example USA 3.5, Spain 4.1.

  • Thanks Norfolkboy. That is reassuring.
