Hi everyone,
My father has recently been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer which has spread outside the prostate. He is already receiving hormone therapy (implant) and is due to start 6 cycles of chemo in the next couple of weeks and I'm looking for any tips/advice that can help or even minimise the side effects if possible.
Thank you
It varies person to person but fatigue is the main side effect alongside a metallic taste in the mouth, rashes and maybe some constipation. For me it has been manageable, knowing that the main side effects occur on days 3 to 6 (with chemo taking place on day 1). The best advice I can give you is to learn to plan your life around the chemo to take advantage of the days and weeks when the side effects are at their least. They will prescribe Filgrastim for self injection for a week from day 3 to boost white blood cells.
Freeze down tinned pineapple pieces & give him them to suck on during chemo, helps take away the metallic taste. As been said before chemo effects everyone differently, I was fortunate & had very little side effects. Get a digital thermometer & keep an eye on his temp daily, will be one of the first sign of infection. Plenty fresh fruits will give a boost to sagging energy levels. Most importantly he should listen to his body , if tired rest
Wish your father well on his journey
Hi Tcat
Chemotherapy works different for everyone, usually it hits after two days and at first it can be harsh, extreme sweats is the worst, then fatigue, there are numerous side effects, have a look at my profile I got most of them. One thing I try to push on everyone starting chemotherapy is take a temperature morning and before bed, any deviation ring the hospital, very important.
After three cycles you get a bit more active and more used to it, so hope your dad does ok.
Stay safe
Joe
